Our first panel at #DEC2026 explored how the EU and its partners can strengthen Europe’s digital security and sovereignty through cooperation
Hendrik Bourgeois of Mastercard highlighted that trust and security are essential to digital services and depend on strong public-private cooperation. Sovereignty must come without unintended consequences and keep driving growth. Strategic diversification should be the focus, and networks need to be able to operate under stress
Thibaut Kleiner of the European Commission stressed that sovereignty doesn’t mean going it alone, it means building resilience through trusted partners, while developing Europe’s own technology in critical areas
Moderated by Kait Bolongaro, the discussion looked at what a secure and sovereign digital Europe means in practice
Next: from ambition to adoption in AI
We’re live at #DEC2026, where we’re asking how Europe can cut through digital complexity
Malte Lohan opened the discussions by looking at Europe’s digital agenda through a transatlantic lens. As each other’s biggest partners in digital services, the EU and US depend on one another for resilience. Looking past our differences and protecting that relationship is critical to keeping both economies secure and competitive
Up next: how partnership can build Europe's digital capacity
Beating cancer is one fight. Protecting the heart through treatment is another.
Heart-related complications are now the second leading cause of death among cancer survivors, and diagnoses in Europe are set to rise 18% by 2040.
@GEHealthCare Europe is one of more than 60 partners participating in COMPASS, a €50.5 million initiative. COMPASS is building an AI-powered system that flags cardiotoxicity risk early, so oncologists and cardiologists can act sooner and keep cancer treatment on track.

AmCham EU has joined 22 other business, financial and professional associations in calling on Member States to reach agreement on the Commission’s Tax Simplification Package.
The measures could save businesses operating in Europe around €8 billion a year, money currently absorbed by complexity rather than invested in growth. Agreement will only matter if the package’s ambition survives the negotiations.

How are companies adjusting to an evolving transatlantic trade environment?

Labas from Vilnius 👋
We’re two days into our delegation in Vilnius, ahead of Lithuania taking over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in January 2027.
So far we’ve met Kęstutis Budrys, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Lukas Savickas, Minister of Energy, along with Vice-Ministers Guoda Burokienė and Tomas Juočys, as well as Kara McDonald, US Ambassador to Lithuania.
Our message throughout has been that the EU’s competitiveness agenda cannot lose steam. Businesses need to start feeling simplification in their day-to-day operations, and a Single Market that stays open to investors will be stronger for it.
Thank you to everyone for the open and constructive conversations so far on what Lithuania wants to achieve during its Presidency and how business can help.
As EU leaders gather in Brussels for today’s European Council, ‘One Europe, One Market’ is back on the table
Simplification is a shared task.
Common EU rules mean little if national barriers keep fragmenting the Single Market

Europe wants to simplify, but what is making things so complicated?
Common EU rules mean little if national layers, repeated reporting and barriers between Member States keep fragmenting the Single Market.

One litre of waste oil can contaminate one million litres of water, according to the European Commission
So what happens to our used cooking oil after the frying is done?
At @Cargill's facility in Ghent, Belgium, used cooking oil and other residual oils are treated as a raw material and turned into biodiesel for trucks and ships
Since production began, an estimated 1,188,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided, the equivalent of about 550,000 cars off the road for a year
