President Donald Trump greeted workers and signed hard hats at the White House ballroom construction site on Wednesday — the seemingly celebratory affair in stark contrast with his new political reality in Washington.
It marked his first appearance since Republicans' overwhelming losses in the midterm elections, where the building's final steel beam was set to be hoisted into the ceiling.

President Trump says he's “not even a little bit” concerned about the potential for Democrats to launch impeachment efforts against him as the party takes control of both the House and the Senate next year.
“I think it would destroy the Democrat Party if they did that. Impeachment for no reason. What? For having a successful country?” Trump said, as he took questions from reporters at the White House on Wednesday following Republicans’ midterm election losses.

Pope Leo XIV met with American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan in a private audience on Wednesday, November 4. The Vatican press said that during the brief meeting between the two, the Holy Father presented the singer with a rosary, while Dylan reciprocated with a copy of his book.
Leo, originally from Chicago, is a known fan and quoted a 1963 anti-nuclear protest song by Dylan, "Go Away You Bomb," in the preface to a book released in July.

Looking ahead to the 2028 election, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) says Democrats are well-positioned to keep momentum going in Texas after projected wins in the gubernatorial and Senate races.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) calls the midterm election results "a reckoning and a reset” for Republicans and believes Democrats focusing on “kitchen table issues” helped them get ahead.
She told CBS Mornings that the GOP’s messaging strategy using “common sense versus crazy” is “not a policy agenda."
"There was a tone-deafness this election cycle from Republicans," Stefanik said.
Asked about Vice President JD Vance's view that Republicans lost control of the House and Senate because of the conflict with Iran, President Trump told CBS News' @Weijia Jiang it's "largely true" because the war drove up the price of gasoline.
"If I had to do it again, I'd have to do it again, because, long-term, it's the only answer," the president said, adding, "You can't let Iran have a nuclear weapon."
Trump said he believes the Iran war was worth losing control of the Senate. He clarified that he does not believe the war itself is to blame for Republicans' losses, but the price of gasoline. cbsn.ws/4efWMob
Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews is projected to win South Carolina's U.S. Senate race, becoming the first woman elected to the Senate from the state and the first Democrat to win the seat in nearly 30 years.
The unexpected victory follows a contentious Republican primary after the death of longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham, whose sister, Darline Graham, was appointed to fill his seat before seeking a full term.

In his first public remarks after the midterm elections, the president is showing the press the ballroom construction project.
Dr. Annie Andrews' projected victory in South Carolina marks the state's first Democratic Senate win in nearly 30 years and its first woman elected to the Senate. As CBS News' @olivialarinaldi reports, the historic result could also give the state a bigger role in shaping the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, with potential contenders already making campaign stops there.
