Africa’s PH burden is shaped not only by heart disease, but also by infections that remain endemic across the continent.
HIV.
Tuberculosis.
Schistosomiasis.
The PH conversation in Africa has to include them.

Pulmonary Hypertension is not just difficult to treat.
In many parts of Africa, it is difficult to even diagnose.
Limited access to echocardiography, specialists, and advanced testing means many patients are diagnosed late.
#PHNoBeJoke #PHinAfrica
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is not a single condition, but a group of five distinct conditions, each with different causes, mechanisms, and clinical profiles.
Understanding these groups is essential for accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment.
We walked together in 2024 and we’re walking together again 🤝💙
The KB Klub and the Cardiac Community are collaborating on Walk4PH 2026, to shine a light on pulmonary hypertension in Nigeria.
PH NO BE JOKE! It’s serious, and it requires urgent attention.
A powerful session today with Dr. Bonaventure Dzekem, whose work continues to highlight the realities of Pulmonary Hypertension care in Africa, from delayed diagnosis and limited access to treatment, to the urgent need for African-led research and locally generated data.

Highlights from the webinar: PH in Africa- The realities
An estimated 8 out of 10 PH cases in Africa remain undiagnosed.
Because access to imaging, specialists, and advanced diagnostics remains limited.
#PHinAfrica #PHNoBeJoke
One thing that stood out from Dr. Bonaventure Dzekem’s presentation:
The PH burden in Africa cannot be fully understood through Western data alone.
Africa needs stronger local registries, more African-led research, and better representation in clinical trials.

A striking point from today’s #PHinAfrica webinar:
Pulmonary Hypertension affects an estimated 6–11% of adults living with sickle cell disease in Africa and is a major predictor of mortality.
This is one reason breathlessness and fatigue in SCD patients should never be dismissed automatically.

🫀Heart failure affects more than 60 million people worldwide. It is a serious, progressive condition where the heart is weaker or stiffer than normal, making it harder for blood to circulate properly. It is the leading cause of hospitalization for people aged 65+.
They are connected conditions. The best response to heart failure is to see the whole picture and treat the whole person.
May is Heart Failure Awareness Month , led by the Heart Failure Patient Network at @GlobalHeartHub — the international alliance of heart patient organisations. 🌍 Learn more: globalhearthub.org/heart-fai…

You sabi PH? #walk4ph
About 1% of the world’s population has Pulmonary Hypertension and in people over 65, it can be as high as 10%. This is not as rare as people think.

What may sound harmless can delay diagnosis, treatment, and access to the care they truly need.
Pulmonary hypertension is a serious condition that requires awareness, early detection, and proper medical attention.
This World Pulmonary Hypertension Day, let’s do better.
