Today, the African Union Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations hosted on the margins of the #WPSWeek2026, a high-level dialogue on advancing the Women, Peace and Security (#WPS) and Children Affected by Armed Conflict (#CAAC) agendas through integrated systems of legal identity, protection, inclusion and support for children in conflict zones.
The event featured the @_AfricanUnion Commission Chairperson’s Special Envoys on Women, Peace and Security, H. E. Amb Liberata Mulamula (@Amb_Mulamula ) and Amb Jainaba Jagne (@AmbJJagne ), #AUC Special Envoys for Children Affected by Armed Conflict, the @UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General @_VanessaFrazier and the #AU Permanent Observer to the #UN, Ambassador Mohamed Fathi Edrees.
Discussions focused on bridging institutional mandates, strengthening women’s leadership in community protection, and translating AU–UN commitments into coordinated action for women and children affected by armed conflict.

🇱🇻🇺🇳 The Parliamentary Secretary of the @Latvian_MFA , @dacemelbarde , met with @UN Special Representative @_VanessaFrazier to discuss the protection of children affected by armed conflict - a priority for Latvia in the UN Security Council.
🔴 Latvia calls for the immediate and safe return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia. 🇱🇻🇺🇳 We back our words with action: in 2026, Latvia supported the return of 15 Ukrainian children, and in 2025, provided over EUR 3 million in humanitarian assistance to Ukrainian 🇺🇦 children.

👧👦 Thirty years of the Children and Armed Conflict mandate have shown that international action can make a difference. Yet tens of thousands of grave violations against children were verified in 2025.
🔴 The number of children killed in armed conflict increased by 34%.
🔴 The number of children abducted in 2025 was the highest recorded since records began in 2005.
🔴 Emerging technologies are changing the nature of warfare and creating new risks for children, including recruitment through online platforms.
🔴 In Ukraine, Russia’s war of aggression continues to steal childhoods, shatter families, and deprive children of the safety and security every child deserves.
❗️The Parliamentary Secretary of the @Latvian_MFA, @dacemelbarde, underscored the need to strengthen protection, ensure accountability, bring every child home, and turn commitments into action.
