The 242 was the two-door version of Volvo’s famously boxy 240 series, and in the U.S. a ’78 typically came with the fuel-injected 2.1-liter B21F four-cylinder making 104 horsepower. That does not sound very exciting today, but the 240’s appeal was never really about straight-line speed. These cars earned a reputation for being simple, durable and almost absurdly practical, and the two-door 242 eventually became the basis for much hotter versions like the 242 GT and later Volvo’s successful touring-car racers. Volvo built more than 240,000 242s between 1974 and 1984, but seeing an early one today still feels unusual. When Ford rolled out the Mustang 2+2 four months after the model’s April 1964 introduction, it gave the lineup a sleek body style that was starting to be a symbol of the “Swingin’ Sixties.” The 2+2 (Ford’s marketing term for fastback) was the sportiest version of the original pony car. A Texan living in California injected some sport into the sporty and created the Shelby GT350. My family went to Los Angeles last week to visit some friends and give the kiddo the gift of Universal Hollywood.
