In 1958, Chairman Mao had the same argument. Humans were doing all the work and sparrows were eating for free, so he launched the Eliminate Sparrows Campaign during the Great Leap Forward.
Some 200 million odd sparrows were killed, which logically saved huge amounts of grain for the Chinese people. But a minor thing happened: nobody was left to eat the insects. Locusts took the harvest, feeding into a famine that killed an estimated 45 million Chinese people.
A little success makes people start calculating who’s “carrying” whom. Same logic is being applied here.
Every person, every association, every region adds something you can’t see on a balance sheet until it’s missing. Bengaluru isn’t Bengaluru without the rest of India.

Very Churchillian - deny the poor and hungry food, let them die like flies because who cares?
If god complexed madmen like him had their way - they would take away as much RAM as possible first from the “third world”, then use the machine they create to rule over and crush the billions of the third world as needed, justifying everything as technological progress.
Bereft of fundamental human values, these characters are a threat to humanity. They are too deep into their own bullshit and have lost their minds.

“A house is not truly a home; it is the woman who makes it one.”
On Karwa Chauth, we revisit a beautiful insight from our archives, where Nityānanda Miśra explains how the Grihastha Ashrama sustains all four Ashramas, with the woman of the household at its heart.
Wishing everyone a blessed #KarwaChauth! @MisraNityanand
Logical extension of the Mumbai Dabbawala system? Would be a worthwhile experiment for India.
The biggest mistake tourists make in Japan is dragging a fifty-pound suitcase up and down subway stairs.
Watch how Japanese travelers board the bullet train. They walk on with a cup of green tea, a small shoulder bag, and both hands free.
Where is their luggage? It is already in the next city, waiting for them.
In Japan, the system is called Takkyubin, recognizable everywhere by a logo of a mother black cat carrying her kitten gently in her mouth.
When you check out of your hotel in Tokyo at eight in the morning, you hand your heavy suitcase to the front desk, fill out a tiny slip, and pay about twenty dollars. You can even send it straight from the corner convenience store.
Then you spend the entire day wandering through mountain temples or eating street food with nothing on your back.
When you walk into your traditional inn in Kyoto that evening, your suitcase is already standing neatly in your room, wiped clean, with the handle turned toward you.
In fifty years of handling millions of bags a year, lost luggage is virtually unheard of.
A society runs smoothly when you can hand your belongings to a stranger at a convenience store and know they will beat you to your hotel.

India was early / first in maps, webmail, search, e-commerce, online office, browser, social, messaging and mobile OS.
- 1995. MapmyIndia started digitally mapping India. Google Maps came 10 years later.
- 1996. Rediff put up the subcontinent's first web server. By 1999 it was reaching 45% of India's internet users.
- 1997. Khoj, an Indian search engine, was live before Google was even a company.
- 2000. Baazee became India's first big e-commerce site. eBay bought it in 2004. eBay India shut in 2018.
- 2005. Zoho launched Writer, an online word processor. Google Docs arrived a year later.
- 2007-08. A dozen Indian social networks: ibibo, BigAdda, Bharatstudent, Yaari. Orkut and Facebook overtook them by 2009.
- 2010. Epic, an Indian browser, got 4.5 lakh downloads in its 1st month.
- 2012. Hike messenger. 100M users by 2016, valued at $1.4B. Shut in 2021.
- 2016. Indus OS became India's 2nd most used smartphone OS, ahead of iOS. PhonePe bought it in 2021.
"Almost" nothing is left standing, except MapmyIndia and Zoho.
Always remember dependence has a bill. In July 2025, Microsoft cut Indian refiner Nayara Energy off from its own data over EU sanctions. It took a Delhi HC case to get it back. In July 2024, one faulty update from one American firm stopped check-ins at Indian airports.
I know that Indigenous Products have to win on merit but again merit needs users. 🙏🙏

What made the Rajput charge so fearsome? What gave the Marathas the audacity to challenge mighty Timurids? And why did the worship of Shakti occupy such a powerful place in their warrior traditions?
My latest piece for @IndiaToday explores a forgotten dimension of India’s martial heritage: the sacred bond between the Goddess, the sword and the battlefield.
For the Rajputs of Mewar and the Marathas of Swarajya, devotion was not the opposite of defiance. The worship of Shakti embodied the courage to resist, the resolve to fight and the refusal to surrender. From the martial traditions associated with the Khanda to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s veneration of Bhawani, the Divine Feminine occupied a place far beyond the confines of ritual.
And this spirit did not end with the warrior kings. Generations later, revolutionary nationalists would invoke the Mother as Shakti in their struggle against British rule.
Dussehra was not just a celebration of a mythological victory. It was a summons to courage.
The Rajput sword. The Maratha Bhawani Talwar. The revolutionary’s invocation of the Motherland. Different struggles, different centuries, yet a recurring civilisational conviction: when the Mother calls, the warrior must rise.

OPINION | From Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Marathas to Maharana Pratap's Rajputs, the worship of Goddess Bhawani and Shakti was deeply intertwined with martial traditions. Dussehra was celebrated as a festival of victory. It was also a time when warriors honoured their swords, invoked divine blessings and prepared to march into battle.

Ben Horowitz on treating your story as your strategy, and why founders often skip writing it even though it's one of the most important parts of the job:
"The story of the company is also the strategy of the company... In your mind, you're kind of adjusting that strategy a little bit at a time every day. But then a quarter later, it's actually pretty different than what you started with."
"So it's really important that you keep upgrading your story. The articulation of your story. I would definitely recommend it be in written form."
"Something that you can share with everybody in the company, and everybody you're recruiting, everybody you're trying to raise money from, all your constituents, every customer."
"The problem that I think founders have is it doesn't feel like work. Like, 'What are you doing today?' 'I'm working on my story.' That doesn't sound like work."
"Because it doesn't feel like work, people don't do it, but it's probably one of the most important parts of the job."
