Your CV isn’t bad. It’s identical to four hundred others. That’s worse. A bad CV at least gets noticed. An identical one gets skimmed, filed and forgotten. Try this. Cover your name at the top. Could the rest belong to any other mid-level developer applying for the same role?🧵

Recruiters don’t shortlist the best coder. Most of them can’t tell who that is. They shortlist the person they can describe in one sentence to the hiring manager: “The ex-nurse who builds healthcare tools.” “The one who ran a kitchen before moving into backend.”

If they can’t finish “the one who…”, you’re not on the list. Your stack gets you into the pile. Your story gets you out of it. So finish this sentence about yourself: “The developer who…” If your answer ends in a tech stack, start again.
100+ applications, zero interviews…

How would you answer the question: Why should we hire you?

Not every tech career post needs to be about AI. A new member told me yesterday they'd followed me for a year. The reason they stayed is that I don't turn everything into AI. The market IS changing. But AI didn't take junior jobs. Bad positioning did.

Behavioural interviews don't reward competence. They reward whoever tells the best story. That's not fair, but it's true, and you can learn it without becoming an actor 🧵

The irony: good engineers often UNDERSELL themselves because they think the work should speak for itself. It doesn't. Nobody in that room can read your code. They can only hear your story.

If you don't tell the story, nobody cares about the skill behind it. You're not acting, you're translating. Follow for more of this, or reply with your worst behavioural interview answer and I'll tell you how to fix it.

Here's why you're not landing interviews of getting job offers right now.... Every dev pitches "I know React" or "I know TypeScript". Great, so does everyone else and this is only making you blend in, not stand out. So, let's learn from Stephen King and South Park! 🧵

You list your tech skills, one after another, and yet we know nothing of the character. People don't buy soulless events, they buy stories and characters that they feel invested in. Your job applications are easily dismissed as there's nothing to identify with.

You are so much more than a résumé and until you understand this, the market will appear to be entirely against you and unfair 🤷‍♂️
