Trump genuinely believes that when you buy something you want, you lose money. It's world-historical stupidity. By his illogic, we'd all be better off never buying anything from each other.

Bottom line is Donald Trump broke a trade agreement (that he signed) and levied illegal tariffs. Now the administration does not know what to do as Canada walks away from their stunts, pivots to new trading partners, and is now out performing the US economy. @petehoekstra .

Trump described Canada as a far greater enemy of the USA than Putin’s Russia.
It is time to say this openly:
– The USA is currently ruled by a dictator who was most likely recruited back in the days of the USSR.
– As it turns out, the American system of checks and balances does not actually exist in reality.
– The trust between Europe and the USA—which had existed since at least 1945—has been buried; if not forever, then certainly for a very long time.

Trump: “We could do tremendous good for ourselves by just not trading with countries.
We lose $200 billion dollars a year with the European Union. If I didn't trade with them, we would lose nothing.”
Dumbest. President. Ever.

It’s still Twitter.
It’s still the Kennedy Center.
It’s still Lake Ontario.
It’s still the Department of Defense.
It’s still the Gulf of Mexico.
And Donald Trump is still a pedophile.

The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.
The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.
Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.

Team Canada needs to stand together more united than ever before.
The prime minister has my full support for a strong response—tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar. As we fight to protect Canadian sovereignty and economic security, everything needs to be on the table. Ontario is ready to do its part.

I am a dual citizen, both Canadian and American, having been born to Canadian parents who emigrated from Montréal to Buffalo shortly before I was born there in 1961. I love both countries, even if I am not insensible of the failings of each.
That said, this Administration’s unprovoked and serial attacks on Canada are indefensible, utterly contrary to the long-term interests of both countries, and contemptible in every sense of the word.
So far, I have spoken diplomatically, using euphemisms.
What is worse, and far beneath my well-deserved contempt, is the indifference and apathy of most Americans, whose President has not only run roughshod over his own Constitution and his country's historic alliances, but also attacked my other country, my beloved Canada, whose (conflicting) values and culture, however imperfect, are things in life that I cherish. There is no price for that, really.
Indifferent Americans might not mind that their fat buffoon in office is plundering and ruining the world for his own gain and childish vanity, but I do. I do very much, as a matter of fact.

This morning, Michiganders woke up to the news that their costs are going to once again skyrocket because of Donald Trump’s failed presidency.
For centuries, Michigan and Canada have been partners, allies, and close friends. Trump’s reckless and unnecessary trade war is blowing that up and making life more difficult for millions of Americans.
You don’t rob your neighbor. This trade war must end so we can get our economy back on track. I will keep pushing to block Donald Trump’s tariff regime and keep fighting to lower costs for Michiganders.

New Trump tariffs just went into effect. Now it’s 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.
That means higher costs for small businesses, farmers, and all Minnesota families.
Canada is Minnesota’s #1 trading partner. Minnesotans are paying for Trump’s chaos.

Canada is Virginia's #1 export destination. President Trump's newest set of 50% tariffs on goods imported from Canada will hurt Virginia families, farmers, producers, foresters, and businesses.
We have seen time and time again how President Trump's careless, chaotic tariff policies have direct consequences for Virginians. They raise prices and destabilize relationships that our producers and businesses rely on. These damaging tariffs will cause further harm to Virginians in a matter of days.

Canada. Mexico. The EU. NATO. Ukraine. Iran. Greenland. Allies, adversaries, longtime partners, Democrats, the media… it doesn’t matter.
Everyone Trump deals with is the problem. They’re unfair. They’re taking advantage of America. They’re acting in bad faith. They can’t be trusted.
There’s an old saying: If you run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. If you run into assholes all day, you’re the asshole.
