Encryption is an essential technology that protects private communications, financial transactions, sensitive information, and more. Yet it continues to face growing pressure and policies that seek to weaken it. On 21 October, the Global Encryption Day Summit 2026 brought together experts and advocates from around the world to discuss #encryption and why protecting it protects people everywhere. Over five sessions, the summit explored policy challenges facing encryption, emerging threats to privacy tools, public attitudes towards encryption, and preparations for a post-quantum future. Learn more about each of the sessions and explore key takeaways from the event ⬇️ internetsociety.org/blog/202…

Most information online is only available in a few languages. And as the use of generative AI systems increases around the world, this language divide is only deepening. People who use less common languages often cannot use the AI systems that so many others are using. And many of these communities already struggle with the greater challenge of not having affordable, reliable, and resilient Internet connectivity. To address this language divide, we are joining the Gates Foundation and 59 other signatories in a joint commitment to help ensure that more people can use AI tools in their own languages. If you want to understand how the solar revolution is playing out across the Global South, a pretty good place to start is Agbon, Benin, where I lived for 2 yrs. It's an exceedingly unexceptional place: the reason solar is taking off there is because it's taking off everywhere🧵
