After leading large public school districts, three former superintendents say microschools offer a way for public schools to serve students, empower educators, and address community needs. @deborahgist @tvanderark @LCCollaborative @Getting_Smart @The74 the74million.org/article/mic…

Small, flexible "microschools" are booming in homes, churches and storefronts. Can school districts go "micro" too?

At the @Kennedy_School, I learned many lessons including from Senator Alan Simpson.
1. Compromise is necessary.
2. Go big.
3. Expect the heat and don’t fear it.
4. Facts matter; people deserve the truth.
5. Respect difference & respect others.

No matter how many times I see it illustrated, I’ll never stop marveling at the miracle of early development.
Think about it…
In little more than a year, infants go from largely helpless to highly independent, from pre-verbal to skilled language users, and from processing the world mostly through sensory experiences to sophisticated thought.
Speaking of sophisticated thought, this little guy offers us a fantastic window on his own as he explores a toy medical kit.
Examining a set of tweezers, he pinches them together, contemplating their function and potential - and how painful it might be if his own finger were to be caught in their grip.
He decides to act the scene out.
Note that as he does, he winces in pain, cries out in mock agony - AND THEN places his finger inside. 😂
After a gentle pinch he drops both the tweezers and the sound effects as if to say, “yeah, that’s what it might have been like.”
It’s such an interesting window on his thinking, progressing from 1) this is what tweezers do, to 2) I bet it wouldn’t be fun to be pinched, to 3) here’s how I’d probably react if that ever happened to me.
A great reminder that play is how children process the world.

We love Tulsa!
I want to congratulate my friend Monroe Nichols on being elected Tulsa's 41st mayor. This is the greatest honor Tulsans have in our power to bestow on one of our neighbors. Mayor Nichols has my full commitment to do all I can to help him launch his Administration successfully on December 2nd. I am excited to begin that transition, and we are scheduled to meet on Thursday to kick things off.
I also want to thank my friend Karen Keith for loving our city enough to put her name forward as a candidate, and for running a campaign that attracted the support of thousands in our city. Karen has our city’s gratitude for all she has done - and will continue to do - for Tulsa.

Compassion can be learned. Let’s model it and teach it.
Compassion naturally comes easier for some people than it does for others.
Research has shown that compassion is to some degree genetic, and that we may be inherently drawn to people with these traits. However, plenty of evidence also shows that compassion can be learned. The key is to use your conscious faculties to push beyond your feelings.
There is no label like empath for someone who has become especially compassionate, but you’ll know it when you achieve it, and others will, too.

George McLaurin, the first black man admitted to the University of Oklahoma in 1948 was forced to sit in a corner far from his classmates.
When he first applied he was denied based on his race. He went to court & it ruled that denying him was unconstitutional.
George W. McLaurin provided the Oklahoma civil rights case that irreparably damaged the "separate but equal" legal position established in Plessy v. Ferguson in 1896.
Plessy v. Ferguson was a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in which the Court ruled that racial segregation laws did not violate the U.S. Constitution
The justices affirmed that McLaurin’s 14th Amendment rights means he must receive the same educational experience as OU’s white students.
He earned a master's degree from the University of Kansas and taught at Langston University, an all-black institution, until 1968.

Language has its own special genres. And your toddler is working to master them all.
Yesterday I shared a fantastic video example of a toddler engaged in a pretend phone call. He took conversational turns, laughed at his imaginary partner’s joke, and knew to end the call with a goodbye and pressing the “end call” button on his toy telephone.
At less than 2 years old, he had the phone call genre down pat.
Today here’s another amazing example: the bedtime story.
Watch as this little one takes over “reading” duties - turning the tables on her adoring dad.
I’ve shared lots of reading videos before, but this one is notable in its complexity.
Listen as she uses variegated babbling (remember this from two weeks ago… it’s babbling that combines a wide variety of syllables and sounds) to recount a lengthy story for dad.
Listen as well to the tone and rhythm of her voice. It’s the same soft, flowy, and expressive style he uses to help calm her as she begins preparing to drift off to sleep post story.
I’d say this little one has the “bedtime story” genre on lock.
Isn’t it amazing to see how children concurrently learn not just language, but the different contexts and styles of its use?
Just fantastic.
