The headline JOLTS job openings data for September came in stronger than expectations and the underlying details were constructive.

The hiring rate rose 0.1% to 3.4%, but well below the 2017-2019 average of 3.8%. The layoff rate declined 0.1% to 1.0% and the quits rate rose 0.2% to 2.1%. The labor market continues to exhibit a “low hire low fire” dynamic.

The BEA's July PCE revision wasn't new disinflation; it was a methodological reclassification that left consumer prices unchanged while cutting reported core inflation by 36bps, the largest such adjustment in recent history.
