Skill, dedication, patience and 450 hours of craftsmanship 🪨
Our stonemason, Steve, has spent several years working in his own time to create an impressive sandstone replica of the Sanctuary Ring.
Carved from a 314kg block of Blaxter sandstone from Dunhouse Quarry in Staindrop, County Durham, the replica took around 450 hours to complete. Terry, our Joiner, created the plinth out of seasoned oak.
Steve has generously gifted the finished piece to the Friends of Durham Cathedral, and a the moment it is now on display in the Museum, where visitors can view it free of charge, with no museum ticket required. @DCathFriends
