Somebody asked me last week why we would "choose" to live on one income when two would be so much easier.
Easier for what, exactly?
The DINK couples I know have beautiful apartments and Sunday brunches. What they usually don't have is anyone depending on them, shaping them, or forcing them to grow up.
Our home is loud. It is expensive in a different way. But every single day it is producing something a bigger paycheck never could: children who know how to read, how to argue well, how to love their neighbor, and how to run a household of their own someday.
Augustine talked about ordo amoris, rightly ordered love. Some things are worth more than money because they were never supposed to be measured in money in the first place.
Which household are you building?

It is easier than ever to live a comfortable life and harder than ever to live a beautiful one.

Horten Kirke in Horten, Norway.
Built in 1855, Horten Kirke is a Gothic red brick Lutheran church designed by Christian Heinrich Grosch, one of Norway's most prominent 19th-century architects. It remains an active parish in the Church of Norway.
This is exactly how I feel about everything. Quality is holistic. I aim to surround myself with things that indicate a level of self-respect of their creator, because it makes me respect myself and do better work.

When you become competent, you gain the most underrated privilege: you stop rushing. Rushing is what insecure men do to prove they matter. Competence lets you move slowly, choose better, and stay calm while others panic. The room feels that calm and reads it as authority, because it usually is.
