A German frigate has been put through its paces in Plymouth as Royal Navy trainers tested its ability to respond to a major humanitarian disaster. FGS Hessen faced a demanding disaster-relief exercise organised by FOST designed to ensure the ship is ready to deploy on operations.
FOST is the Royal Navy’s internationally renowned operational sea training organisation, responsible for helping prepare surface ships and submarines for frontline operations. Its expertise extends beyond the Royal Navy, involving visiting foreign and NATO naval units.
Priorities were clear: save lives & alleviate suffering by providing medical support, emergency shelter, food & clean water. The scenario tested the sailors’ ability to respond effectively to the type of humanitarian crisis naval forces could be called upon to support.
The exercise saw Hessen respond to the fictional aftermath of a hurricane that had caused devastation across the Southwest peninsula. Her ship’s company deployed to Bull Point village, where they were tasked with providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
