One of the neat things about polynomials is that you can know a lot about their roots without actually finding them.
Take ax² + bx + c = 0. If its roots are α and β, then
α + β = −b/a
αβ = c/a
These are Vieta’s formulas, named after François Viète, who developed the idea in the 16th century.
The coefficients are not just numbers in an equation. They already tell you how the roots are related.
