Today is #ElectionDay. Whatever the result, make sure your #heart is on the winning side.
Yesterday I talked with @AlexSavidgeKTVU and @HeatherHolmesTV on @KTVU about what this week means for your #heart. Thank you both for the gracious welcome and thoughtful questions.
⚡ We studied 6.4 million adults across #KaiserPermanente in Northern and Southern California. We compared the five days after the election with the same five days two weeks earlier. The study was published in @JAMANetworkOpen.
⚡ In the five days after the 2020 #presidential election, hospitalizations for heart attack were 42% higher in our health system.
⚡ This is an association, not proof of cause. It studied a presidential election, not a midterm. But it fits what we know: intense #emotional stress can #trigger cardiac events in people who are already at risk.
My advice for this week:
1️⃣ Do not forget to take your medications.
2️⃣ Set a time to stop checking results. #SocialMedia feeds can be relentless.
3️⃣ Protect your sleep.
4️⃣ Go for a walk.
5️⃣ Know the warning signs: chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, sudden weakness or trouble speaking. Call 911.
Your #ballot counts. So does your #blood pressure.
