Kunio Watanabe's "The Loyal 47 Ronin" (1958) Blu-ray - Kazuo Hasegawa, Shintaro Katsu, Koji Tsuruta, Raizo Ichikawa, Yataro Kurokawa, Machiko Kyo, Fujiko Yamamoto, Michiyo Kogure, Chikage Awashima, Ayako Wakao @imprint_films @viavisionent AU: viavision.com.au/products/ch… BONUS CAPTURES: patreon.com/dvdbeaver/posts/… OUR REVIEW: dvdbeaver.com/subsite/film3/… Chushingura: The Loyal 47 Ronin is the all-star epic version of Japan's most-told story. Kunio Watanabe's film gathers seemingly every Daiei star of the era for a reverent, handsomely mounted telling of the Akō vendetta. Kazuo Hasegawa (Gate of Hell, The Crucified Lovers, An Actor's Revenge) anchors it as Ōishi Kuranosuke, all controlled surfaces as he feigns dissipation in the pleasure quarters to throw off Kira's spies, while his own men begin to doubt him. Raizō Ichikawa (An Actor's Revenge, The Betrayal) is the proud, wounded Lord Asano, goaded beyond endurance by Osamu Takizawa's (Fires on the Plain) loathsome Kira. Shintaro Katsu (The Tale of Zatoichi, Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo, Hanzo the Razor) brings warmth to Akagaki Genzō's famous farewell, and Kōji Tsuruta (Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island, The Japanese Godfather) adds gravity as Okano. Takashi Shimura (Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Godzilla) has a surprisingly comic turn as the father-in-law of one of the ronin. The women are just as starry. Machiko Kyō (Rashomon, Ugetsu, Gate of Hell, Floating Weeds), Ayako Wakao (A Geisha, Floating Weeds, Red Angel, Irezumi), Fujiko Yamamoto (Equinox Flower, An Actor's Revenge), Chikage Awashima (Early Summer, Early Spring) and Michiyo Kogure (Drunken Angel, A Geisha, Street of Shame) each give the sacrifices behind the vendetta a human face. Takashi Watanabe's scope photography fills the frame with palace splendor and lantern-lit streets, building to the snowy night assault on Kira's mansion. Ichirō Saitō's (The Life of Oharu, Ugetsu, A Geisha) score lends it all a mournful dignity. It lacks the austere formal rigor of Mizoguchi's The 47 Ronin and the revisionist edge of Kon Ichikawa's 47 Ronin, but it delivers the story in its fullest. Imprint’s worldwide Blu-ray premiere has a few blemishes and some frame instability at transitions. Still, it offers rich period color, intact grain, a solid 24-bit mono track, and two strong new extras from Jonathan Wroot and Aaron Gerow. For fans of jidaigeki and Japanese cinema of the golden age, this is an essential and long-overdue release. This star-packed epic is absolutely recommended!

Seven Limited Edition releases from the 70s grace the Imprint Collection this November, including five worldwide Blu-ray debuts! ✨ Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro return to our screens with NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977), this time on 4K UHD + Blu-ray! This 4-disc Hardbox of Martin Scorsese’s previously sold-out musical classic includes a hardcover booklet, the Director’s Cut in 4K and on Blu-ray, and Blu-ray presentations of the European Theatrical Cut and a Special Features disc. Romance soars at the height of the Cold War in THE GIRL FROM PETROVKA (1974), starring Hal Holbrook, Goldie Hawn, and Anthony Hopkins. As sparks fly between a U.S. journalist based in Moscow and a Russian ballerina, the KGB takes a keen interest. And for the first time on Blu-ray worldwide: FOR PETE’S SAKE (1974), DARLING LILI (1970), WHITE SISTER (1972), LADY CAROLINE LAMB (1972), and THE LITTLE PRINCE (1974). The screwball comedy FOR PETE’S SAKE contrasts the gritty streets of Brooklyn with a joyful performance by Barbra Streisand, who plays the wife of a NYC cab driver finding himself in debt. She scrambles to find a way to pay the money back... away from her husband’s eyes and marriage vows. Julie Andrews resembles real-life spy Mata Hari in the romantic musical comedy DARLING LILI, which was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Original Song. Masquerading as a British singer, German spy Lili Smith’s mission goes awry when she must seduce a womanising American pilot. Film star Sophia Loren and music star Adriano Celentano create an unlikely duo in the Italian comedy WHITE SISTER, which mixes politics, church, and romance in a tale of a nun who falls in love with her Marxist patient. The directing debut of Robert Bolt (Lawrence of Arabia), LADY CAROLINE LAMB is an epic drama that recreates a love affair and front-page scandal from 19th-century British high society. Directed by Stanley Donen (Singin’ in the Rain), THE LITTLE PRINCE is a Hollywood retelling of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic children-adult novella, starring two-time Tony Award winner Richard Kiley, Gene Wilder, and Bob Fosse. 1500 copies of each title only. 📀 Pre-orders open 15 October.
