Next, you might tackle wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Ideol… — Guilds facilitated self-interested defense of the state, to secure continuity in the state-backed guilds. Once guilds were abolished, a standing army was needed for defense, because young men no longer had a stake in preserving the system.

Keep in mind that one can cause "harassment, alarm, or distress" in England and Wales by uttering a true statement of fact to someone who doesn't want to hear it, or by offering an honestly-held opinion or belief, spoken or written, which also offends.
🚨 NEW: Respect Orders are now live across England and Wales People who cause harassment, alarm or distress to others can receive bans from town centres, anger management courses or unlimited fines Anyone who breaches an Order can be arrested and jailed for up to 2 years

The observable universe may hold around one septillion stars. Your brain isn’t built for that number. Write it out and it looks like a typo: 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. That’s a one followed by 24 zeros, and every single one of those zeros is pulling its weight. They aren’t packed into one neat corner of space, either. Those stars are scattered across an estimated two trillion galaxies. Two trillion galaxies. Each one loaded with its own suns. And we’re on a single planet, orbiting one of them.

Great read and very helpful to think about what comes next.. what institutions will be born and negotiated after the coming exogenous shock?

The interesting thing is the political entrepreneurship of Network States ultimately want to be recognised as sovereign states. That’s cool but history offers a more interesting template in the Hanseatic League, a polity of trading posts defined by the commerce it protected rather than the territory it held. For economies of humans + agents, that's the more interesting model; extra-territorial, flow-based, bound by charter rather than borders.

elon popping the AI bubble after front running the Anthropic and OpenAI IPO is like watching an episode of billions and succession lol

Pretty much. As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers. SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue. That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.

Magnificent essay by @vgr “The crucial economic question then becomes not how much intelligence people can produce, but how much intelligence they can find uses for.” this is the future of universities - to lead discovery of the uses of intelligence open.substack.com/pub/contra…

2003: "Few collectors have the resources or the space to preserve and display video art. The Kramlichs understood the challenges and hired curator Christopher Eamon from the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York to maintain and expand their collection." 3/7 We're also investing £120m more in @AISecurityInst, £60m in a new National Cyber Shield and £70m in a new National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability (NERV) Centre. These investments will strengthen our ability to understand AI risks, identify cyber vulnerabilities and protect critical infrastructure.

2/7 We're launching a £165m National AI Biosecurity Initiative, including £100m for a world-first AI Biosecurity Lab. This will harness British scientific expertise and latest AI to detect biological threats and protect people from emerging risks. As with our @AISecurityInst, I want the new AIBL to lead the world in capability.

And is it ours to shape? 🇬🇧 Today, Chancellor @JohnHealey_MP is announcing a major, ambitious package of investment to strengthen Britain's defences against emerging threats, back British innovation, and build our technological independence.
