🌍 #WSDS2026 | #ThematicTracks 🌿 At the recently concluded WSDS 2026, a partner thematic track was convened to address a critical question: as solar power becomes the bedrock of global energy, how do we ensure its growth is as sustainable as the energy it produces? The session, ‘The Next Solar Frontier: Circularity, Resilience & Responsibility’, brought together global leaders at the Taj Palace to confront the looming challenge of solar and battery waste. With over 1.86 TW of solar capacity installed globally, we are approaching a "retirement cliff." Projections from the @isolaralliance (ISA) suggest that global solar PV waste could reach 124 million metric tonnes by 2049. This is no longer a distant problem—it is a strategic imperative that requires action today. A major highlight of the track was the official launch of ‘Emerging Battery Technologies: Advancing Recycling Guidelines for Lithium-ion Batteries.’ This initiative falls under SUNRISE (Solar Upcycling Network for Recycling, Innovation & Stakeholder Engagement)—ISA’s global platform to operationalize solar and battery waste management. Key Strategic Objectives: ▪️ From Linear to Circular: Moving beyond "deployment only" to include design for disassembly, reuse, and high-value material recovery. ▪️ Harmonized Standards: Addressing the fragmented policy landscape to create globally aligned recycling and safety guidelines. ▪️ Operationalizing Traceability: Exploring the role of Digital Product Passports to track battery value chains and enable second-life applications. ▪️ Shared Responsibility: Defining how accountability should be distributed across manufacturers, developers, financiers, and recyclers. The question is no longer whether solar can scale—it is whether it can scale responsibly. By transforming EoL (End-of-Life) challenges into opportunities for green jobs and resource security, we can ensure the solar frontier remains truly sustainable. @Ashish_Khanna | @mnreindia | @gurleenk_shares | @oiseaulibre3 | @rjain88 | @CEEWIndia | @CSIR_NPL | @ShaktiFdn | @WRIIndia | @UL_Standards | @kparveen79 | @chetanpathak89 | @CustomizedES | #WSDS2026 #Parvartan #Act4Earth #SolarEnergy #CircularEconomy #ISA #Sustainability #CleanEnergy #BatteryRecycling #EnergyTransition #SUNRISE

India has the potential to generate 180 GWh of retired lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from energy storage and transportation applications. Recycling these can help build a domestic secondary supply chain, reduce lifecycle emissions, and support India's 2070 net-zero ambition. @WRIIndia ‘s launch of Battery360 Alliance is a Gr8 effort towards promoting domestic battery reuse, recycling, and repurposing. Delighted to write with @Madpai in today’s @HindustanTimes on the critical role of battery manufacturing and recycling in creating jobs, and spurring innovation.
