At the stage of dissertation editing where I am employing the "toddler in the carseat" method of paragraph transitions: I grab the reader and say COME ON WE ARE GOING HERE NOW GET IN THE CAR.

To my writing students past and future, I can only repeat the advice of one of my great teachers: Do as I say, not as I do.

As a child, I really underestimated how many of my adult problems would be mitigated by lying on the floor.

There's a special place in heaven for my advisor who works on poetics but has to deal with reading my work, resulting in actual emails like this from me:

Not me accidentally singing under my breath "everything comes out teenage pestilence" while editing a dis chapter on plague, trauma, and Freud. I love you, it's running my life, indeed.

New high/low: was just recognized by the owner of a coffee shop while working at a different coffee shop in the neighborhood.

Me: I should be writing. My brain: Andrew @Hozier-Byrne wrote “Moment’s Silence” in 2018, why has anyone written ANYTHING since then.

Triple checking the science parts of my conference talk tomorrow so I don't embarrass myself in a room of experts and all I keep thinking is dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a-- wait no, I'm not even that. 😅

God bless the waiter who, when I asked for seltzer and bitters, nodded and said “oh— is it— okay.” And then softly set the glass on the table.

Writing a paper is more about spending hours and hours to find a reference to support what you know is absolutely true but you just need someone to agree with you 😂😂

My biggest culture clash moment in Europe this trip has been looking a bottle of water at the Kiosk, finding one that’s 75l and the cashier asking me, “it’s not too big?” Ma’am, you haven’t seen me hungover in NYC— I was looking for a bottle twice this size.

HUGE fight brewing in my Starbucks over whether a fellow barista said "want" or "will"-- don't let anyone tell you English doesn't have a subjunctive mood. It does, and it matters.

"Obviously Langland believes we deserve to suffer, he wrote Piers Plowman" -- My brilliant medievalist advisor (whom I adore) shading the hell out of me for working on this poem. #medievaltwitter #AcademicTwitter

Love a spooky manuscript (I got excited that this was 14th c, but it’s actually early 15th, which makes more sense).
Spooky, scary skeletons! 💀 In this allegory of La Danse Macabre in a 14th-century Book of Hours, an abbot is led away by one corpse whilst the other holds the gem of his habit. A very spooktacular site for #Halloween night! 🎃💀 (@MorganLibrary MS M.359, f. 132r)

Current mood:
“Because one who does not know how to write thinks it no labour, I will describe it for you, if you want to know how great is the burden of writing: it mists the eyes, it curves the back, it breaks the belly and the ribs, it fills the kidneys with pain, and the body with all kinds of suffering… as the last port is sweet to the sailor, so the last line to the scribe.” - a 10th-century scribe
