16 October is the feast day of St Hedwig (1174–1243), patron saint of orphans. Her name comes from Old High German words for battle and war, suggesting a female warrior. J. K. Rowling named Harry Potter’s owl after this medieval saint, fittingly, as Harry was himself an orphan.

Right: A detailed 19th-century natural history illustration of a Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca) by Magnus von Wright from Svenska Fåglar (Swedish Birds).

The reflecting pool is empty and blocked off. The Kennedy Center is completely boarded up. The East Wing is in ruins, and the White House looks like a tacky, cheap Vegas whorehouse with all the fake gold laminate.
