The future of air travel is taking off from coast to coast in Florida! 📍🍊 FDOT is redefining how people and goods move with advanced, electric aircraft that can quickly connect communities with dedicated aerial highways throughout the state. From the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic Coast, FDOT is launching these aircraft to Florida’s skies through a never-been-done series of test flights as part of the @FAANews’ eVTOL and AAM Integration Pilot Program. Florida’s Future of Flight Series will provide real-world insight to the FAA as they help prepare the nation for commercial AAM services.

Pictured here: An FDOT traffic recorder being observed in 1957. Devices like this were part of Florida’s early traffic monitoring efforts, using the data for traffic engineering, safety, and management purposes. Fast forward to today, FDOT’s Regional Traffic Management Centers act as the hub for disseminating information to the travelling public! By monitoring traffic on Florida’s roadways in real-time, our teams ensure traffic keeps flowing and quick response times for incidents and motorists in need of roadside assistance.

👻 BEWARE 🎃 Halloween brings more pedestrians to our neighborhoods and roadways, and we all share the responsibility to keep everyone safe. Drivers: There’s nothing spookier than driving impaired! Never get behind the wheel under the influence of marijuana, alcohol, and other substances. Be sure to slow down, stay alert and watch carefully for children who may unexpectedly enter the street.   Trick-or-Treaters: Be sure to use sidewalks and crosswalks, carry flashlights, or wear bright or reflective costumes to be more visible to drivers. May your Halloween be full of treats and safe streets 🍬

Florida has once again made aviation history in Tampa Bay with today’s demonstration of two aircraft from @BETA_aircraft and @JobyAviation recreating this historic route over 100 years later. Keep your eyes on the sky as more flights are planned in the coming weeks!
In 1914, thousands gathered on the shores of Tampa Bay to witness Tony Jannus make history with the world’s first commercial airline flight. Today at the same site, we celebrated the first flights of “flying cars” in Florida—electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft retracing Jannus’ historic route.   Today’s flight event, which featured three types of eVTOL aircraft, was part of a series of demonstrations through the FAA’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Integration Pilot Program. I’m proud of Florida’s leading role in this national program and the years of preparation that brought us here. We’ve made infrastructure investments, enacted innovation-friendly policies, and worked hard to usher in a new era of transportation here in the Sunshine State.   Florida has long been a staging ground for the future. Today’s historic AAM flights have proven that Florida remains on the cutting edge of transportation innovation.

While 4 bridges cross over the Tampa Bay, the 4.1-mile-long Sunshine Skyway Bridge is the only one that spans three counties: Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Manatee. This vital link sees over 50,000 vehicles every day, serving as a major commuter route for the region. @MyFDOT_Tampa

Did you know that Florida’s drivers travel to the moon and back over 1,400 times a day?! Well...sort of. On average, 682 million vehicle miles are travelled on Florida’s roads EVERY day. With a trip to the moon being approximately 238,000 miles – that's like making the voyage there and back thousands of times daily!

Two simple choices that can save lives: Buckling UP, phone DOWN!   FDOT is proud to join other state DOT’s to remind everyone that small habits can be just as impactful on safety on the road.   Buckle up and put your phone down anytime you get behind the wheel.

Being seen is key 🔑 Pedestrians should always wear bright or reflective clothing to increase their visibility when walking in the dark or low-lit conditions! It’s a safe and simple measure that reduces the chance of being un-seen by drivers and other motorists.
