A wildfire in steep, inaccessible terrain in the White Mountains southeast of Gorham has expanded to 1,000 acres, according to the White Mountain National Forest.
The Wild River Fire was first spotted Sunday afternoon. As of Wednesday morning, it was only 11% contained, according to a spokesperson.
Gorham Fire Chief Philip Cloutier said while small blazes occasionally break out in the White Mountains, a wildfire of this size is rare.
"That's very uncommon in our area," he said. "The largest wildfire that we can remember was just under 100 acres, and that was over 20 years ago.
The U.S Forest Service, which is managing the response, says persistent drought conditions have contributed to the fire’s spread. At least 50 personnel are on scene, using helicopters and drones to try to control the fire. Firefighters are working to dig fire lines to contain the blaze.
“The Wild River Fire is actively burning in timber, snags, and leaf litter,” the agency said. “Gaining access to the fire is difficult due to steep and rugged terrain.”
The Forest Service instructs drivers who encounter smoke to slow down and turn on their headlights, and asks people to avoid flying personal drones near the fire.
