Again: At this point we should be criminally prosecuting politicians, media commentators and lobbyists stopping us taking action on climate change.
They are endangering all of us.

Yesterday marked the 130th consecutive day of record global sea-surface temperatures, with yesterday's temperature 0.21°C warmer than the previous record for October 9th, set way back in 2023.

Net-zero by 2050? 2070? Ain't gonna' happen. Well, it might. But for another reason.

YIKES! THIS SHOULD BE HEADLINE NEWS.
Latest NASA GISS V4 global land and sea data show the record August heat of 15.40°C. It continues the EXPONENTIAL WARMING. The probability for a better non-exponential model is very small, less than 0.00005.

Every fraction of a degree matters.
1.5°C is not a slogan. It’s the line between a livable world and cascading collapse: mass coral death, irreversible ice loss, and millions more climate refugees.
Science already told us. Policy is still lagging.
Demand better.

One more totally fucking nuts graph for today, care of a request by @LeonSimons8.
Not only is the current standard deviation for the Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature above 4SD over the 1982-2011 mean for the first time on record, but no previous year even reached 3SD.

Can we finally stop pretending nuclear is "unreliable" because of droughts and heatwaves?
New study: across 500+ reactor-years in Europe, heat & drought reduced output by just 0.6% (max 1.3% in any country). That's peanuts.
Solar and wind are FAR more weather-dependent and thus less reliable year-round, even during droughts. Heatwaves often bring still air, so low wind is common exactly when it's hottest. Nuclear's capacity factor is ~90.9%, way steadier.
And the fixes work: French river-fleet heat losses dropped 91% (5.5→0.5 TWh) since 2003 through cooling upgrades.

Aalo Atomics CEO @MattLoszak makes the single most important statement of the "Powering the Nuclear Renaissance" hearing in his first (verbal) sentence in this video. It's nuanced and so easy to miss that even @AaloAtomics own marketing team omitted it from their written quote!
So forgive my soap box, but the most important thing said in this hearing was "It's imperative that we not lose to China on this massively impactful technology".
Now the quiet part Matt didn't say out loud. aAs of this moment, we ARE losing to China on nuclear energy strategy. LOSING BADLY.
Yeah, I know, it sucks to admit that but it's still true, and denying reality won't help. The good news is that @SecretaryWright completely understands this, and is making incredible progress helping companies like @aaloatomics who have a viable clean energy strategy to realize that strategy and help put America back in the lead on the most important technology on Earth.
China has more conventional nuclear reactors planned or already under construction than the entire U.S. fleet. China has already announced a new fleet of containerships powered by advanced nuclear. China has already put a massive large-scale high temperature gas-cooled reactor into operation. China has already demonstrated Thorium to U233 breeding in a prototype that will lead to a full breeder reactor fueled by Thorium, eliminating the need for Uranium enrichment forever.
The "quiet part out loud" that Matt of course had the good taste NOT to say out loud in a congressional hearing is that the United States of America is NO LONGER IN THE LEAD on Nuclear Energy technology and even more so, on nuclear energy deployment. China is. We need to reverse that, or the balance of power globally will shift completely in the next 20 years, then China will run the world for the next century.
It's long past time for the country that INVENTED this technology to re-assume a position of leadership. @AaloAtomics is a poster boy example of American Technology kicking ass. Until @SecretaryWright took the helm, this was impossible because Government was standing in the way of progress. We're finally back on the right track. Let's keep the momentum going, eliminate the bureaucratic and regulatory obstacles, and chart a course for a whole new era of human prosperity under safe, clean nuclear power.
Repost this if you give a shit about America regaining its place as global technology leader. In case you couldn't tell, it's a passionate topic for me...
"The best way to power AI is with nuclear power. Advanced nuclear needs no water, uses a small amount of land, is clean baseload... [and] thanks to the choice of sodium as our coolant, we will have a very compact, mass-manufacturable design."
- Matt Loszak at Energy Subcommittee Hearing: Powering the Nuclear Renaissance:
That's exactly why we invest in #advancednuclear — the energy of the future — and invite all accredited investors to invest with us! Nuclear innovation is finally having its moment and there are so many exciting new ventures developing amazing technologies!
Because I was there, and very aware of climate change from the late 1970s - right up to 2000, and after, it was generally assumed that fossil fuel burning would have been largely phased out by now. 30+ years ago, it was widely understood as the only way to tackle climate change.
Since then, we have been subjected to an extensive gaslighting programme sponsored by the fossil fuel industry, the senior politicians they sponsor, the oligarch owned media, to make the public forget that this was ever the case.
