It's time again for Matt's Mythbuster Monday! 🔆⚡ 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳-𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘢𝘳-𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦. Solar-powered or “self-powered” tracker controllers have big advantages over ac-powered tracker controllers.   𝟭. ac-powered controllers require miles of cable and conduit;    • Miles of trenching or cable trays;   • Many junction boxes;    • And lots of labor.    • All these are expensive, and unnecessary for solar-powered tracker controllers. 𝟮. Modules are often mounted onto the trackers before the site has ac power.   • So, the tracker control system – without power – can’t respond to weather conditions – wind, hail and snow – to protect the modules.   • Modules may be damaged.   • But solar-powered tracker controls can work even before the site has ac power. 𝟯. Later, after the solar power plant is operational, storms can cause power outages.    • And again the modules may be vulnerable to wind, hail and snow – but not if the controls are solar-powered. Solar-powered tracker controllers offer lower cost and higher reliability. But they use batteries, and the safest and most reliable batteries – LFP or lithium iron phosphate – only work well when the temperature is above freezing. The map above is based on historic low temperatures. Solar-powered tracker controllers are often used in the “Warm” region, because the temperature is rarely below freezing. Solar-powered tracker controllers are sometimes used in the “Moderate” region, but they perform poorly in the winter. Most solar-powered tracker controllers do not work well “Cold” and “Very cold” regions. In 2024, new technology was developed, enabling the use of LFP batteries in cold climates. Laboratory testing has showed excellent performance down to -35° C (-31° F) – so these controllers can work well in the “Warm”, “Moderate” and “Cold” regions. The yellow and green dots in the map show beta sites, in the northern Midwest and in New England, where this technology was used at solar power plants, and performed flawlessly through the winter of 2025-6. It’s now a reality, that we can use solar-powered tracker controllers almost everywhere in the lower 48 states – lower cost and higher reliability than ac-powered tracker controllers. We blinked and somehow July is nearly over! After kicking off the month by celebrating Independence Day, Eric Goodwin headed to Athens for the Georgia @SolarFarmSummit where he connected with customers, developers and industry partners about the growing agrivoltaics market. Back in Indiana, we hosted @psgenergygroup and Stella Energy Solutions at our Pierceton manufacturing facility where we spent time touring the facility and discussing current and upcoming projects. Throughout the month, we continued sharing insights on the importance of protecting solar plants from hail and wind, while highlighting the growing demand for the skilled solar workforce needed to support America's energy future. And we're back with another Matt's Mythbuster Monday!⚡ 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: Hail and wind are two distinct problems. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Hail always comes with wind, so a solar power plant must be protected from both wind and hail simultaneously. About two years ago, a large solar power plant near Houston sustained extensive hail damage. Our industry was shocked; at a trade show a few weeks later, the first word out of everybody’s mouth was “hail”. Tracker suppliers rose to the challenge; in fact, to their credit, a few already had. 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗱. 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁, a “hail feature” – that is, an algorithm using streaming Doppler radar data, and weather data from the site, to anticipate hail and take action to reduce risk. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱, a “hail tracker” – structural changes to improve the trackers’ ability to stand up to hailstorms. Both these solutions are important, and they can work together. But a myth emerged that could limit our industry’s ability to manage these issues: The belief that either hail or wind must always be prioritized over the other. The reality is, damaging hail comes from unique “supercell” storms, which always produce high wind too. So it is essential to protect the solar power plant from both wind and hail simultaneously – or at least to use the strategy which minimizes total risk. This is much more complicated than either wind risk mitigation or hail risk mitigation alone. But if we don’t accept that challenge – if we artificially consider wind always the greater risk, or hail always the greater risk – we will produce algorithms which don’t minimize total risk and which sometimes may actually increase the risk of damage to a site. The good news is, we now have tools, including Machine Learning, which can move this challenge from nearly impossible to just difficult. June proved to be a busy month! We kicked off the month with Matt's mythbuster, where he discussed agrivoltaics and how crops and livestock can successfully coexist with solar. Back at home, we celebrated Safety Month with the @MacLeanFogg team, reinforcing our shared commitment to creating a safe workplace. Then we hit the road for CLEANPOWER, where we attended conference sessions, met with customers and partners and hosted a client event at Kulture. (We even got to turn Eric into an astronaut!) Next we headed off to Chicago for Intersolar Midwest, where we partnered with @helienesolar and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters Solar Renewable Energy Team for a luncheon at the UBC Training center. And we finished off the month at @SEIA's Finance, Tax & Buyers Seminar, where we had the opportunity to meet their new President. From Houston to Chicago to New York, June gave us the opportunity to connect with customers, partners and leaders across the industry. Like all conferences, CleanPower isn't just about what happens inside the convention center. We stayed a little closer to home in May, but it was still a busy month at OMCO Solar. ☀️ Eric Goodwin as Uncle Sam, continued to spark a lot of conversations around timing, manufacturing, and the tax credit deadline. May also gave us the chance for Matt Kesler to keep busting solar myths and cover the impact of legislation on the industry and a realistic look on how long it takes to manufacture solar mounting systems. But one of our favorite moments this month was spending time with a local kindergarten classroom talking to them all about solar. Seeing that level of curiosity and excitement from the next generation never gets old. Now we’re looking ahead to June and getting ready to head to Houston for CLEANPOWER 2026.
