Precision oncology can fail even after the right test is ordered.
At COGC 2026, Glenn Balasky of Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers examined where NGS breaks down: tissue, timing, interpretation, reimbursement, and follow-through.
The key question: did the result actually change what happened next for the patient?

ESMO 2026: NEOASIS Study Evaluates Neoadjuvant Botensilimab Plus Balstilimab in dMMR Colorectal Cancer
At ESMO Congress 2026, Emma van den Berg presented results from the Phase II NEOASIS study (837P), evaluating short-course neoadjuvant botensilimab plus balstilimab in 18 patients with non-metastatic, resectable dMMR colorectal cancer.
Key findings:
▫️ Major pathological response (MPR): 83% (15/18), meeting the prespecified primary endpoint.
▫️ Pathological complete response (pCR): 72% (13/18).
▫️ Safety: Grade 1–2 immune-related adverse events occurred in 72% of patients. One Grade 3 colitis event and two cases of ileus were reported.
▫️ Organ preservation: One patient with synchronous colon and rectal tumours opted for rectal organ preservation following a complete endoscopic response, while undergoing surgery for the colon tumour.
Takeaway: Short-course neoadjuvant botensilimab plus balstilimab showed high rates of pathological response in this small Phase II dMMR colorectal cancer cohort. The findings support further investigation, including an ongoing rectal cancer organ-preservation cohort.

New Episode of Experts by Experience
In our next episode of Experts by Experience, Jordan and Anna Rathkopf share their breast cancer journey through the powerful lens of photography, storytelling, and lived experience.
They reflect on how documenting their journey helped them express difficult emotions, better understand each other’s perspectives, and challenge how cancer experiences are portrayed.
By bringing their personal experiences to the forefront, Jordan and Anna remind us why listening to patients and caregivers is essential to building more compassionate, inclusive, and patient-centered cancer care.
