My first podcast interview on how we're making mines more productive at @realmalliance. Thanks @mfwarder @TheCoalTrader for having me on!
New @TheCoalTrader podcast! This week we sat down with @realmalliance CEO Eugene Marinelli to talk about bringing AI into #coal mining: belt monitoring, safety, downtime, flotation, productivity, and the very real challenge of lowering cost per ton. Give a listen! #CoalTwitter

BREAKING: America is moving to build the world’s first synthetic mine. The DOE has selected four projects for $73M in funding to create real-world proving grounds for new mining technologies, including underground test sites and the synthetic mine in Texas. The facilities will let mining tech startups test automation, sensing, drilling, electrification, and other systems before live deployment, helping de-risk technologies that large mining operators may be reluctant to test in active production environments. Projects include Innovative Wireless Technologies in Colorado and Virginia, the University of Arizona, the University of Missouri, and Southern Methodist University’s synthetic mine in Texas.

Coal counts 55% of energy balance in China and just 9% in US AI revolution caused Data centers growth demand for electricity provides reasons to expect the Renaissance of coal industry in US for at least a feasible feature:
Thank you Germany 🇩🇪 and UK 🇬🇧 for heroically sacrificing your economy to save the planet 💪 _

We’ve already seen trillions of dollars poured into solar panels, wind farms, battery storage, and grid upgrades under the banner of green energy. The narrative was seductive: build out renewables, clean tech wins, fossil fuels fade away. But that storyline underestimated what happens when energy demand explodes and it just did, thanks to AI, data centers, and electrification. Data centers and AI workloads are now among the fastest-growing power consumers in the world. Electricity demand from AI and server farms could double by 2030. In the U.S. alone, data centers are expected to consume more power than some major industrial sectors combined. The moment GPUs started training trillion-parameter models, every assumption about “flat power demand” went out the window. That’s where the weakness of renewables becomes obvious. Intermittent sources like solar and wind can’t reliably deliver baseload power, especially when demand spikes or when you need consistent, high-density energy around the clock. The “duck curve,” grid instability, and massive storage inefficiencies mean we would need to overbuild generation and storage capacity to absurd levels just to keep up. The result: even more capital waste or major reliability risk. So now we face a paradox. We’ve spent a decade betting on a clean-only future, yet the sharp rise in AI and digital energy demand requires scale and reliability that renewables alone can’t deliver. If we refuse to lean on fossil fuels, we risk ceding the energy foundation of the future to China, a country that burns coal unapologetically while building out the largest AI infrastructure in the world. Fossil fuels aren’t just coming back. They’re about to become the geopolitical lever of the decade. Oil, gas, and even coal offer dispatchable, scalable energy density that no battery can replicate. In a world where energy equals intelligence, whoever controls reliable power controls the AI frontier.

2025 Copper Miners $COPX +63% Apple $AAPL +3% Amazon $AMZN +0% The US power grid is 30 years old in some areas, 50 in others. To support AI data centers, EVs, and robotics (100M next decade) - we need a dozen new copper mines across the Americas from south to north. Listen to Robert - "they cost $5B to $20B each and take 10-20 years to complete." *Book ideas: "When Markets Speak."
Back in late 2023 when I appeared on Bloomberg, we were already flagging tight smelting conditions and supply challenges in the copper market. Prices were at approx. $8,500/tonne at the time ... people were questioning copper demand dynamics amid high rates and Chinese economic conditions. We looked beyond the near-term noise at growing grid investment demands, national security issues, growing supply shocks, and the challenges in bringing new mines to market. Today copper is well over $10,000/tonne and rising ... largely due to the issues we discussed almost two years ago when I said "nearly any disruption could result in a sharp upward move in prices":👇

The goal of humanity for the next few years will be converting physical coal to virtual coal
Pretty cool that my electric bill has gone up 25% so other people can make this crap.
