Soundtoys EQ expert @KurtJamesWerner is back on the lecture circuit. Tomorrow, May 2, he'll be at New England Synth Fest sharing "Reverse Engineering the Motown EQ," the story behind how we modeled two legendary pieces of hardware, the Motown EQ and the Altec 9062A, with no schematics and little published information.
This event is open to all. Saturday, May 2, 12–6 PM at Northeastern University in Boston (Kurt's talk is at 4:30 PM). Join for a full day of lectures, performances, vendors, and a synth petting zoo.

This is circuit archaeology in action. Our resident researcher and EQ expert, @KurtJamesWerner, is heading to MIT to give a seminar on "Reverse Engineering the Motown EQ." He'll share the story behind how we modeled two legendary pieces of hardware: the Motown EQ and the Altec 9062A.
What does it take to faithfully recreate gear with no schematics, almost nothing published about it, and in some cases, information that turned out to be wrong?
For Kurt and the team, it meant:
• Disassembling the devices and tracing the circuit boards by hand
• Deriving new equations that had never been published before
• Running test signals and SPICE simulations to validate the design
• Coding up our own real-time simulation (with a few new features along the way)
This talk builds on Kurt's DAFx 2024 paper, "Graphic Equalizers Based on Limited Action Networks."
