To everyone who sent me your game today: THANK YOU. Seriously, thank you so, so, so much. 🙏 There were way too many for me to reply to every single one, and I'm sorry I can't. Moving forward, if you'd like me to play your game on stream, fill out this form: forms.gle/y2RF2EfCgAdWXxUE8 I can't guarantee I'll play every game, but this keeps things way more organized, so I can do a much better job of it. 🎮 #indiedev #indiegames

Looking for some indie games to stream today when I go live in about an hour. What you got? No horror games or inherently evil games.

I'm Dan. Made my first game in 2011. First QA credit in 1999. 15 years full-time in the games industry. On Wednesday my own game, The Canon Keeper, hits Steam. If you make indie games or stream them, let's connect. What are you building?

☕ GAME DEVS, IT'S MONDAY. THIS ONE'S FOR YOU. 15 years in games. Here's the Monday morning stuff I wish someone had told me before I spent years opening Steamworks before I'd opened my eyes: ✅ Check your wishlists once, then close the tab. Refreshing doesn't make the number go up. I've tested this extensively. ✅ The bug you found Sunday night is still there. Coffee first. It's not going anywhere, and neither are you. ✅ 47 Discord pings doesn't mean 47 emergencies. It means one person found the GIF channel. Triage, then reply. ✅ Monday's to-do list should fit on a sticky note. If it needs a second sticky note, congrats, you wrote a roadmap. ✅ Answer the player who reported the bug before you fix it. A reply in 10 minutes earns more goodwill than a patch in 10 days. ✅ "I'll post about my game later this week" is how a whole week disappears. Post one clip before lunch. ✅ Weekend sales numbers are a weather report, not a verdict. Watch the trend, not the day. ✅ Every dev you admire also opened their project this morning and whispered "who wrote this?" It was them. It's always us. Happy Monday. What's the first thing on your list this morning? 👇 The Canon Keeper hits Steam Wednesday. Papers, Please, but with Scripture. I'll be refreshing wishlists all day. Ignore rule #1. 📜 store.steampowered.com/app/4… Oh yeah, I started a newsletter. The first edition already went out, but if you want in on next week's: forms.gle/dtrUfaMBwUkWYJC9A

Sunday night check-in before a big week. Tomorrow, the first issue of The Real Indie Developer newsletter comes out. I've spent 15 years full-time in the games industry, and most of the hard lessons weren't about making the game. They were about the business side: getting seen, building an audience, and turning a project you love into something people actually find and buy. That's what this newsletter is for. Practical indie game business and marketing, written for developers who'd rather spend their time building than guessing. If you want in on issue #1, sign up free here: forms.gle/dtrUfaMBwUkWYJC9A Hope you've had a great weekend. #IndieDev #IndieGameDeveloper #IndieGameDev

I just want to give a huge shout-out to Marllon from @OrGames_net, my publisher for the PlayStation version of The Canon Keeper. Without him, getting the game on PlayStation would not be possible, so thank you so much. And all glory to God. If you are looking for a publisher to port your game to PlayStation, I 100% recommend

A few people have asked a fair question: who am I to give indie game advice? Here's the short version. 🎮 15 years full-time in the games industry 🐛 First game I QA'd: 1999 🛠️ First solo game I made: 2011 🎙️ Host and producer of the IndieGameBusiness podcast 📜 Credits on quite a few games My LinkedIn has a lot of it (not everything): linkedin.com/in/therealindie Some of my credits are on my website: therealindie.com Ask hard questions. I'd rather earn your trust than ask for it.

Unpopular opinion: NEVER make your game your entire marketing plan. Algorithms change. Platforms shift. Front pages move on. Build an audience before launch. Learn the business side. Talk to players while you're still making it. Have a plan that doesn't depend on going viral. (Your mom's wishlist does not count as a marketing plan.) I love making games, but 15 years in this industry taught me the game is only half the job. 🎮 The other half is what I'm writing about in my new newsletter, The Real Indie Developer. First issue drops this week. Sign up 👇 forms.gle/dtrUfaMBwUkWYJC9A

Last night I posted "GAME DEVS, THIS ONE'S FOR YOU" and 12,700+ of you showed up. 😅 36 replies. 118 bookmarks. And I've been answering every one I can. Here's what I learned from reading them all: 1. Devs are starving for honest feedback. Half the replies were "can you look at my game?" Yes. Keep sending them. 2. Everyone's building something cool that nobody's seen yet. VR betas, co-op games, things I'd never have found if you hadn't replied. 3. The business side scares people way more than the code does. Marketing, Steam pages, launch week. That's where I can help. 15 years in this industry and the best part is still this: talking to people who make games. So I'll keep doing it. If you need someone who's been in the trenches to help with your game, my DMs are open for contract work. And if you want the lessons for free, I'm putting them in a newsletter 👇 forms.gle/dtrUfaMBwUkWYJC9A
🎮 GAME DEVS, THIS ONE'S FOR YOU. 15 years in games. Here's the community + social media stuff I wish someone had told me before I spent years posting 'New update! #gamedev' into the void: ✅ Followers aren't an audience until they've talked to you. Reply to people. 300 real conversations beat 30,000 impressions. ✅ Post the game, not the patch notes. Nobody in history has wishlisted a changelog. ✅ The first 3 seconds of your clip ARE the clip. If it opens on your logo, congrats, you made an ad people scroll past. ✅ A Discord isn't a community until someone besides you posts in it. 20 people who care beat 2,000 who joined for a giveaway. ✅ Hashtags are seasoning, not the meal. Eight in a row reads like a ransom note. ✅ Other devs aren't your competition. They're coworkers in the world's least organized office. Share their stuff. They'll share yours. ✅ Viral is a lottery ticket. Showing up every day is a salary. ✅ When someone says something nice about your game, screenshot it. You'll need it at 2 AM in month 14. Got questions? I'm around right now. Ask me anything below 👇 I'm also open for contract work (community, social, launch strategy). DMs open.
