On this episode of the #Sagebrushers podcast, @Pres_Sandoval sits down with Tami Brancamp, Ph.D., founder of the Aphasia Center of Nevada and an associate professor in the Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at @unrmed. Brancamp explains the language disorder aphasia, which can happen after a stroke, a brain injury, a tumor or a neurological disease, and can severely inhibit the ability to speak or understand language. She explains how people with aphasia are historically excluded from and underrepresented in research, leading to reduced understanding of the condition and its impacts on daily life. The two also discuss the University's aphasia camp, hosted annually in collaboration with Sierra Nevada Journeys. The weekend getaway provides opportunities for people with aphasia, their care partners and volunteers to build community, develop skills and spend time in the beautiful Sierra Nevada. Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance to celebrate the people, experiences and cultures that help shape Nevada. 💛 For Brayan Chagolla Felipe, whose path led him to @unrmed’s Physician Assistant Studies Program, growing up bilingual often meant helping his family navigate medical appointments. Years later, those experiences helped shape the kind of provider he wants to be, one who can make care easier to understand and access for Spanish-speaking patients.
