MADISON – A text message appeal to Wisconsin voters sent days before the midterm election urges them, in all caps, to vote for Green Party candidate Pete Karas in the three-way race for Secretary of State. "Our next generation deserves a voice and a future! I will fight for their needs, their opportunities, and their tomorrow," the message reads, accompanied by a graphic featuring a photo of Karas with his fist raised. But the message isn't from Karas. Recipients who follow the prompt, "Reply Stop to Opt Out," receive the following response: "Jay for Wisconsin: You are now opted-out and will receive no further messages." ... "What a schmucky thing to do," Karas said. After reviewing the messages and looking at state law, Karas later told the Journal Sentinel he plans to file a complaint Oct. 31 with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission. State law bars anyone from knowingly making or publishing, or causing to be made or published, "a false representation pertaining to a candidate or referendum which is intended or tends to affect voting at an election." Karas speculated the texts from "Jay for Wisconsin" are intended to act as a spoiler, pushing liberal voters to support the Green Party candidate over Democrat Jocasta Zamarripa. "Jay should be running on his own merits and not look for me to help him. He is buying into the perceived spoiler effect," Karas said. "People have to earn their votes."
