Ava DuVernay remembers Washington Post film critic Ann Hornaday, honoring the humanity, dignity and respect she brought to film criticism, even when she didn’t love a movie. In conversation with IndieWire’s Chris O’Falt at Art of the Doc, presented by National Geographic Documentary Films, DuVernay reflects on the relationship between filmmakers and journalists and the importance of telling people’s stories with care. #AvaDuVernay #AnnHornaday #IndieWire

Tonight, Ava DuVernay’s ‘14th’ has its Closing Night #NYFF premiere. The documentary focuses on the 14th Amendment and its increasingly fraught place in American political life. New photos from the film feature Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Stacey Abrams, Devon Henry and Professor Sherrilyn Ifill. Read THR's deep dive into the film: hollywoodreporter.com/movies…

#14th by Ava DuVernay explores the formation/erosion of the amendment. It's punctuated by images from pop culture promoting the insidious Lost Cause myth. In the Q&A, Sherrilyn Ifill mulled how documentary offers a new POV on such pop forms & mythologized history. #NYFF64

The importance and timeliness of Ava DuVernay’s follow-up to her Oscar-nominated 2016 documentary, 13th, cannot be overstated. With a similarly accessible and impactful approach to a dense, complex subject, DuVernay makes abundantly clear the severity of the threat currently facing American democracy through the many recent strategic attacks on the 14th Amendment, not only by the current administration but by a hateful movement that dates back to the Civil War. 14th is a vital and infuriating piece of filmmaking that seeks to educate its audience into action, particularly as this year’s midterm elections approach. Unfortunately, the film’s constant use of AI to animate archival photographs is a constant source of distraction, undermining what was otherwise shaping up to be every bit as powerful and effective as 13th was a decade ago.

-14th (Ava DuVernay): You may think that the didacticism that defines the director's timely needed follow up to 13th would be more relevant than revelatory. However, this is a masterclass on history, legislature and democracy that leaves you more enlightened and alert. #NYFF64

With 14th, Ava DuVernay transcends historical revisionism. If 13th exposed who gets locked up, this deconstructs with penetrating lucidity who gets to tell the story. A forensic atlas of citizenship that dismantles the current constitutional myth. Masterful & challenging. #NYFF64
