Great to receive my copy of 'American Presidential Election Campaigns', edited by @IainDale. There is a chapter on every US presidential election. I wrote the chapter on 1872, one of the most fascinating, in my view. The Democrats were so pessimistic about their chances of defeating Ulysees Grant that they nominated a Republican, Horace Greeley, who turned out to be a highly eccentric and erratic candidate, who died within days of the election. Congress refused to certify electoral votes for a dead man, making him the only Democratic nominee not to receive any electoral votes. – at Faringdon, England

OUT TODAY! Delighted to have contributed the 1860 election chapter to this. It explains how Lincoln was only able to be a great statesman because he was first a great politician. A lesson for all wannabe leaders. The primaries were a masterclass in strategy, tactics and execution amazon.co.uk/American-Presid…
