In exclusive reporting for @globeandmail , @MercedesGlobal and @StephanieLevitz reveal how antisemitism is bringing together threats from across the extremist spectrum, including white nationalists, individuals inspired by Islamist terrorist organizations, Iranian regime-linked threats and online networks targeting young people. Security officials warn that radicalization that once took months can now happen in less than a month. They also pointed to five terrorist plots targeting Jewish communities disrupted in Canada over the past three years. This week, Canada released its first National Security Strategy in over two decades, recognizing that threats once thought distant are now immediate. Next Thursday's federal budget is an important opportunity to begin putting that strategy into action, including by renewing Canada’s counter-radicalization strategy to prevent extremism from escalating into violence. Joint Statement from @FederationCJA and CIJA An incident took place late Thursday night at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, where several windows were damaged by what appears to be pellet gun fire. The @SPVM and Federation CJA’s Community Security Network (CSN) were immediately notified, responded swiftly, and are actively investigating the matter, including a thorough review of security footage. All involved parties will remain in close contact in the coming hours and days to determine the full details of this event. Based on the information we currently have, there is no active threat to the community at this time. Nevertheless, in a climate of rising antisemitism, we take this kind of incident extremely seriously. While the investigation is still underway, we note that this is the second time in less than six months that Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom has been the target of a violent act. Enough is enough; this must stop. The Montreal Jewish community is tired of fearing for its safety and the safety of its children. We remind all community members of the importance of remaining vigilant. If you see something, say something. Report any suspicious activity immediately to the SPVM, as well as to the Community Security Network (CSN) by calling 514-343-4343 or via federationcja.org.

The findings of the Government of Canada’s Campus Antisemitism and Student Experiences (CASE) report make clear that hate and antisemitism on university campuses demand urgent action. Today’s announcement by @UnivCan of its five-point action plan is an important step toward ensuring our campuses are places where all Canadians - regardless of background - can learn, teach, work and conduct cutting-edge research without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence. We commend CEO @GabrielbMiller and university presidents for demonstrating leadership and committing to action. We are particularly encouraged by the plan’s emphasis on enforcement and institutional accountability. University leaders cannot resolve conflicts in the Middle East. But they can uphold their own institutional policies, enforce standards of conduct and ensure campuses remain places where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We also recognize Heritage Minister @MarcMillerVM's participation in this week’s discussion with university presidents and supporting a coordinated approach between governments and post-secondary institutions. The forthcoming release by @CdnHeritage of the second part of the CASE report will provide a further opportunity to advance this important work. CIJA and Jewish Federations across the country stand ready to work with governments and university leaders to ensure these commitments translate into concrete, meaningful action. In a world marked by rupture and immediate threats, it is encouraging to see this partnership between one of the world's leading defence firms and Vancouver-based International Submarine Engineering. It is another example of Canada's new Defence Industrial Strategy in action: supporting the growth of small and medium-sized businesses and integrating them into domestic and international defence supply chains. Coming on the heels of yesterday's announcement of Canada's National Security Strategy, this partnership also affirms the Canadian government's new approach to building pragmatic relationships with a diverse range of international partners to expand trade, attract investment and strengthen economic and national security -- in this case, the protection of critical maritime infrastructure. On November 9 at 7 p.m., CIJA is proud to partner with the @chesatottawa in Ottawa for its opening event, featuring @CotlerWunsh, internationally recognized human rights advocate and leading voice on contemporary antisemitism. Marking 80 years since the Nuremberg Trials, Cotler-Wunsh will explore their legacy in shaping international law and how the language of human rights and justice is increasingly being distorted and weaponized to advance contemporary antisemitism. We encourage you to attend this important event or explore the many Holocaust education programs taking place across Canada throughout November. Invite your friends, neighbours and colleagues to join you in learning about the Holocaust and its enduring lessons. Click here: cija.ca/holocaust_education_…

CIJA welcomes the release of Canada's new National Security Strategy, which recognizes that threats once considered distant are now immediate and proximate. For three years, Jewish Canadians have faced these threats directly. As CIJA CEO @nshack emphasizes, addressing antisemitism must be a priority in implementing the strategy, including at the proposed First Ministers' Meeting on National Security. The strategy also presents an opportunity to strengthen Canada's security and economy through pragmatic international partnerships, including with Israel in defence, energy, technology and other areas of strategic importance. CIJA stands ready to work with the government to ensure the strategy translates into concrete action that strengthens the security and economic well-being of all Canadians. On October 24, British Columbians elected the Conservative Party of BC, led by Lorne Doerkson, as their new government. During the election, Premier-designate Doerkson made several commitments to Jewish British Columbians. CIJA Pacific Region VP @nicoslobinsky expresses his willingness to work with the incoming government to ensure these promises become a reality.

In his latest op-ed for the @nationalpost, CIJA CEO @nshack writes that the recent Israeli election provides an opportunity for the Canadian government to renew its relationship with Israel to strengthen security, economic and strategic interests, while giving Canada greater influence in advancing peace and stability in the Middle East. For Jewish Canadians, this relationship also has deeply personal significance. Israel is an important part of our history, culture and identity, just as other diaspora communities maintain connections to their ancestral homelands. At a time when that connection is increasingly being used to justify suspicion, discrimination and hostility toward Jewish Canadians, a stronger Canada–Israel relationship would reinforce that our Jewish identity and connection to Israel are entirely compatible with full and equal Canadian citizenship. A new investigation by @cbcnews sheds light on what experts and authorities have long acknowledged: the shootings at Toronto synagogues and the U.S. consulate earlier this year were carried out by hired gunmen, likely directed and financed by Iran’s Islamic regime. As our allies in Australia and the UK have done, Canadian authorities must clearly identify and hold accountable any foreign entities directing attacks against Canadians. Governments must also ensure law enforcement and security agencies have all the tools they need to detect, disrupt and prevent these threats. Learn more here: cbc.ca/news/investigates/ira…

Today, millions of Israelis are heading to the polls to elect the 26th Knesset in its 78-year modern history -- a powerful demonstration of Israel’s democratic institutions and the diversity of its society. Across the country, Israelis from all different walks of life, including Jews, Arabs, Druze and other minorities, are exercising their right to vote and determine their country's future. In a region where democratic elections cannot be taken for granted, Israel’s electoral system stands in sharp contrast to entities like the Palestinian Authority, where President Mahmoud Abbas remains in office more than two decades after his election in 2005. Swipe through to see the diversity of Israelis participating in their country’s democratic process.

“Our kids are growing up to be warriors. Warriors of courage. Warriors of conviction.” After the homes of Jewish students living outside Western University in London, Ontario, were targeted with a Nazi swastika, one father is speaking out about the courage and pride of his daughters and their friends. In an interview with the @nationalpost, Darren Slavens described how the students responded with solidarity and defiance, affirming their Jewish identity and promptly engaging authorities. The perpetrator has since been arrested and charged with a hate-motivated crime under Canada's new Combatting Hate Act. Read the full article here: nationalpost.com/news/canada…

As communities across the Greater Toronto Area prepare for new municipal government administrations, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and @UJAFederation are calling on elected leaders to make public safety, accountability, and the protection of all residents clear priorities. With Olivia Chow re-elected as Mayor of Toronto, attention now turns to the commitments made during the campaign and the work still ahead. During the campaign, Mayor Chow outlined plans to build on policing investments, expand security funding for vulnerable institutions, and continue efforts to address antisemitism and hate. These are important responsibilities, and the next term of council presents an opportunity to demonstrate sustained progress through consistent enforcement, stronger accountability, and tangible improvements in community safety. While Toronto's mayoral race attracted considerable attention, these priorities extend well beyond Toronto City Hall. Across Vaughan, Markham, Mississauga, and municipalities throughout the GTA, elected officials have an important role in ensuring that public spaces are safe, that municipal services are delivered without discrimination, and that residents can participate fully in community life. A Nazi swastika targeting Jewish students near Western University in London, Ontario, has led to hate-motivated charges, one of several recent cases highlighting how Canada's new Combatting Hate Act (Bill C-9) is being put to use. Our Jewish community -- across the board -- advocated for this vital legislation that provides authorities with more tools to hold hate offenders accountable and better protect institutions of vulnerable communities from hateful protests and incidents. Swipe through these cases that demonstrate the importance of giving law enforcement the tools to confront hate directed at our and other communities But enforcement needs to be consistent across the country. That's why we're calling on Justice Minister @SeanFraserMP to urgently advance the convening of federal, provincial and territorial governments to coordinate enforcement of existing and new hate laws.

“This problem was not created by Jewish Canadians; it does not just affect Jewish Canadians. It affects all Canadians. And we cannot leave it up to our Jewish neighbours to solve.” In a powerful piece for @TheHubCanada, Andrew Bennett and @BrianDijkema call on Canada's Christian community to stand with Jewish Canadians in the face of rising antisemitism. We welcome this call for solidarity and the recognition that protecting Jewish Canadians is essential to protecting the freedoms and values we all share.
