This was an embarrassing night for Arsenal in what is arguably the biggest Carabao Cup shock in history.
Mikel Arteta left many big names at home, but this was still a team littered with established internationals.
For the current Premier League champions and Champions League runners-up to lose to a team 84 places below them in the pyramid was unthinkable.
As well as Fleetwood played, this was a night in which too many of Arsenal’s players waited for someone else to take the game by the scruff of the neck.

Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch: "To beat the English champions on penalties, credit to everyone one of these lads.
"We looked at Grimsby beating Man Utd last year. We compared it even though these are the champions. We thought 'if we lay it all out there, let's see what happens'," he told Sky Sports.

Arsenal are the first reigning Premier League champions to be knocked out of the League Cup by a fourth-tier side.
It’s only the second time Arsenal have been knocked out of the League Cup by a fourth-tier side, after Bradford in 2012/13. Both on penalties. 😬

Never mind Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber, Martin Odegaard, Ebere Eze or Mikel Arteta. How about Jay Lynch, Jake Batty, Harrison Neal, Rhys Bennett, Aaron Loupalo-Bi and Matt Lawlor
18th in League Two, but Fleetwood Town beat the Premier League champions. Magic 🥹

Harrison Neal's penalty vs Arsenal reminded me of David Luiz in the 2012 UCL Final.
Long run-up. No fear. SMASHED it top corner. 🎯
Luiz did it vs Bayern. Neal did it vs Arsenal.
Same DNA! 😤

Fleetwood Town, who are 18th in the fourth tier of English football, have knocked out Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties in one of the biggest shocks the EFL Cup has ever seen.
Bruno Guimaraes saw his penalty saved by Jay Lynch before Conor Haughey scored the winner.
