massive, you can now train your robots in one of 100 real environments thanks to @NianticSpatial
today at @nianticspatial we're launching the Places Library: 100 real environments to train robots in, with even more coming soon. warehouse, last mile, residential, and more. every one a simulation-ready USDZ. start here, then capture the sites you actually deploy into.

I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Trained a humanoid entirely in a 3D scan of the office. Zero real-world fine-tuning. It just walked in and worked. RL needs hundreds of thousands of attempts, and real robots can't afford to crash. A misjudged gap or a glass door collision breaks hardware and costs hours resetting. So you train in a sim. But sim policies usually train on randomized, untextured geometry; depth is easy to fake. The robot learns structure, not the real world: no materials, no lighting, no idea what anything actually is. RGB cameras carry all of that but training RGB policies in generic fake worlds won’t generalize to the real world. @NianticSpatial Scaniverse reconstructs your scan of the real deployment site. One 360° camera walkthrough → photorealistic 3D Gaussian splat at metric scale → collision mesh pulled from the same reconstruction, so vision and physics match exactly. Drops straight into NVIDIA Isaac Sim/Lab, no manual conversion. @FlexionAI simulation-first approach then seamlessly enables the training of RGB-only nav policies inside that reconstruction. With added domain randomization + large image encoders for robustness, this deploys straight to hardware. No real-world fine-tuning. Deployment: months of on-site adaptation → days. Tune into the NVIDIA livestream on 12 August to hear how these companies are closing the sim2real gap: addevent.com/event/gvb8rkdrc… @NVIDIARobotics ~~ ♻️ Join the weekly robotics newsletter, and never miss any news → ziegler.substack.com

Remember Niantic? Yes, that @NianticLabs from Pokemon Go @PokemonGoApp. Well, they partnered with @FlexionAI, and their work is pretty awesome. They demonstrated an end-to-end real2sim2real pipeline for humanoid navigation. Here is the step-by-step breakdown: - an operator walks an office once with an off-the-shelf 360° camera - Niantic Spatial estimates camera poses, and trains a 3D Gaussian splat (overly simplified: they get a fast low compute 3D model) - the splat and mesh is normalized to match NVIDIA's NuRec volume spec - that file now seemlessly loads into Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab, and allows for parallel reinforcement learning! - the resulting RGB-only local navigation policy is dropped onto a physical humanoid - said humanoid walks the real office to three commanded target poses Worth mentioning: it is a demonstration, not a product launch. No humanoid platform is named, no camera model, no GPU count, and no training time. This is demo of feasability of a clever piece of engineering imho. Something interesting I learnt while looking into this: Niantic Spatial holds roughly 10 million scanned locations, built from ~30 billion images, captured over a decade of Pokémon GO and Ingress players. And: they are still taking in about a million fresh scans a week! Also the main learning here imoh: embedding only RGB camera beats stereo depth cameras by about four points in sim. This is insane! Depth cameras are close to being useless for daily humanoid applications; the future will be RGb and Lidar, since depth estimation and 3D reconstruction algorithms have become so good. Final fun fact: Nvidia mafia runs deeps -> Flexion's CEO and CTO are ex-Nvidia, NVIDIA's NVentures is an investor in Flexion, and this demo uses Nvidia Isaac.

A week late to this, but @POLITICOEurope had a good line last week in Playbook: Burnham's comms team are building their grid around four themes: Britain believing in itself again, Britain better off, room to breathe, and power to communities. I found this framework genuinely useful, and not for the politics. It tells you the register this government wants to talk in, and it isn't the language of tech boosterism we've seen in Governments of the past. No "world-leading," no "global race", because there's no cut through. So the question for us is how we make the case for tech in that language. Britain better off: tech as the productivity and living-standards story. Power to communities: digital public services people actually control. Room to breathe: automating the grind, not adding to it. It'll be very important to meet the Government where it is - and I think a lot of tech policy professionals will need to re-consider our messaging and framing.

Physical AI needs more than maps, GPS, or pixels alone. It needs a living, geometrically accurate understanding of the real world. Niantic Spatial and @SpexiGeospatial are partnering to transform drone imagery into large-scale 3D intelligence for physical AI. 🔗Learn more: hubs.ly/Q04hYS1R0 #NianticSpatial #Spexi #PhysicalAI #Reconstruction #GaussianSplat #DigitalTwins #Robotics #GeospatialAI #AI #GeospatialIntelligence #GEOINT #SpatialIntelligence

Appreciate the respect 🤝 The future of 3D Gaussian Splatting depends on open, interoperable formats that make high-fidelity spatial data faster, lighter, and easier to use across the ecosystem. Excited to see the community building with SPZ 4. #NianticSpatial #Scaniverse #GaussianSplat #SPZ4 #Reconstruction #GeospatialAI #AI #PhysicalAI #VPS
Scaniverse is technically our competitor. But they just shipped SPZ 4 😤 Faster encoding, tens of millions of Gaussians, configurable SH quality, extension-based metadata. Hard to ignore. Honestly? Good. The whole 3D Gaussian Splatting ecosystem wins when the format layer matures. Okay. Respect🤝 @NianticSpatial

The @Scaniverse app is one of the best mobile solutions to generate #GaussianSplatting, and it just got better. Here are some facts 👇 The 2 scans you see were captured in (almost) the same moment using: - The app on Android that performed the reconstruction on mobile in around 30 min (on the left) - The app on iOS uploads the footage to the cloud for reconstruction. This is a brand new capability recently included by the team Both scenes came up quite well despite the bright light conditions. - Local (Android): Around 360K splats - Cloud (iOS): Around 1M splats If you haven't tried it yet, I strongly suggest you give it a shot. This experiment is part of a broader testing to see the current state of cloud solutions for the reconstruction of 3DGS. Make sure to subscribe to my newsletter (link on top of my profile) so you don't miss a massive article I am putting together 😉.

“Do you know where a sidewalk begins and ends?” — a simple question from Niantic Spatial CEO, Inhi Cho Suh, that gets to the heart of what today’s AI is missing. For robots, this isn’t theoretical. To safely navigate something as everyday as a sidewalk, they need to understand boundaries, context, and change in real time. Learn about how Niantic Spatial is building the missing piece in Physical AI. hubs.ly/Q04b_dT70 #NianticSpatial #HumanX #GeospatialAI #Robotics #AI #PhysicalAI

Since 1898, the San Francisco Ferry Building along the Embarcadero has been a gateway to the city, once bustling with ferry commuters as a primary travel hub. Today, it’s a lively marketplace where local artisans, food vendors, and a popular farmers market bring history and community to life. Using Scaniverse, Niantic Spatial captured the Ferry Building and surroundings in 3D with Gaussian splats—turning a mobile scan into an immersive, navigable digital twin. This opens up new possibilities: 🌍 urban planning, 🎟️ cultural storytelling, 🤖 robotics, and 🛍️ interactive retail & events.
