Remembering those lost during Operation Red Wings — June 28, 2005 On this day, 21 years ago, in the unforgiving mountains of Kunar Province, Afghanistan, a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team faced overwhelming odds during Operation Red Wings. LT Michael Murphy, GM2 Danny Dietz, STG2 Matthew Axelson, and HM2 Marcus Luttrell displayed extraordinary courage against a determined enemy. Three gave their lives on that mountainside. When the Quick Reaction Force responded, an MH-47 Chinook was shot down, claiming 16 more American heroes — 8 Navy SEALs and 8 Night Stalkers. 21 brave warriors. One unbreakable brotherhood. Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13 Rest in peace, warriors.
