After the Pistons’ 14-win season, Cade Cunningham had FOMO watching the playoffs. He texted someone he knew would understand.
I spoke with them both for an exclusive on how that text sparked Detroit’s two-year turnaround:

Early tests are necessary as the Pistons look to build on last season’s success.
Even with Jalen Duren sidelined, Detroit believes it can sustain its strong start.
“The best thing about it is, we don’t have to reinvent the wheel when one guy is gone.”

Asked J.B. how encouraging it is to be 6-2 while still working on continuity:
“It says a lot about the group. … For us, this is about how do we just keep getting better? As the year goes on, there’s things we can clean up and get better at, that’s what we’re working at now.”
Pistons said he’d be re-evaluated in two weeks on October 25. I’d probably expect an update on his progress sometime this weekend.

Sixers hang on to beat the Pistons 112-106 as Detroit falls to 6-2 on the season.
Duncan had a team-high 27 points on 7/11 from 3 and was a +4. Cade had 26, 11 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Ausar added 11 points and a career-high 17 boards.
Cade and J.B. just had an extended conversation with the officials after feeling like Ausar didn’t get a foul call on that last layup.
Sixers up 56-42 at the break.
The flow of the game was pretty bad in that first half between all the fouls and reviews. Duncan is the Pistons’ lone double-figure scorer with 11 points on 3/6 from long range.
Jaylen Brown has a game-high 23 points.
Just got the replay and it looked like Embiid started it with an elbow to Tolu’s chest and Tolu responded.
Games like these are when you really miss Duren. Philly only has four offensive boards, but the Pistons are missing a presence inside.
