Wash knits cold and inside out, then dry them flat on a towel. Hot water and the dryer shrink them, and hanging a wet sweater stretches it out of shape.

Check the fabric weight, listed as GSM (grams per square metre). Under 150 is light. 150 to 200 is a solid everyday tee. Over 200 is heavyweight: it drapes better and keeps its shape wash after wash.

Turn a sweater inside out before you buy it. Flat, neat seams with no loose threads mean it was made with care.
Messy on the inside usually means it won't last on the outside.

Pilling isn't always a sign of a bad sweater. Soft fibres pill a little with wear.
Don't pull the bobbles off, that loosens more fibres. Use a fabric shaver or a sweater comb instead.

Fold your sweaters. Don't hang them.
A hanger slowly stretches the shoulders into those little bumps, and a knit doesn't bounce back from that. Fold it and keep it on a shelf.
