"Fiscal responsibility should ultimately be judged by whether public finances strengthen the economy’s capacity to grow and withstand shocks."
Our democracies are under threat from austerity. Governments must resist this pressure. That's one of the key messages in our new policy brief, from the Global Council on New Economics for the 21st Century.
Together with @MazzucatoM, @carlos_cuerpo, @Jayati1609, @JosephEStiglitz and many more, I'm looking forward to working with policymakers to implement our recommendations. Read more at the link below.
Thank you James!
That’s such a good point by @MazzucatoM. There’s this general consensus that the answer’s cutting as opposed to actually investing for growth, which should be emphasised instead. Particularly prioritise the most vulnerable. I hope no one slashes Motorbility. #Newsnight #Budget 🗳️
Thank you Sharon!

@MazzucatoM Absolutely fascinated by your views on @BBCNewsnight. May not have understood it all but so much more positive ideas than we are being presented with.

Fiscal responsibility is the right goal, often wrongly defined. Debt measures record what the state owes but not the roads, schools, hospitals and grid that borrowing builds.
Our new policy brief from the Global Council on New Economics for the 21st Century, co-chaired with @Carlos_Cuerpo, sets out what fiscal responsibility actually requires [link in replies].

Nice to see UK Chancellor John Healey highlight the importance of challenge-led procurement in #UKBudget2026. When oriented around clear objectives, public procurement can foster directed innovation and growth around collective challenges like net zero.

£20.4bn of new capital for the National Wealth Fund and British Business Bank is a welcome step. Public finance can drive good growth in every postcode, if it shapes deals around clear missions rather than just de-risking the private sector, and the public shares in the returns.

Public control is the capacity of the state to steer economic activity toward strategic objectives through the public-purpose orientation of its policy tools. Ownership is one tool among many.

What matters is not how much the state owns, but what it makes possible. The purpose the tools serve, the conditions attached to public support, and how success is measured.
New in @ProSyn with @AnnaHopeEmerson on why “public control” could be a playbook for progressive governments, but only if it is rigorously defined.

One month ago, I sat down with President Lula to discuss how government serving poor and working people. Weeks later, Brazil took a historic step: a 40-hour workweek, at least two days off and no cuts to pay for more than 30 million workers.
Workers fought for decades to win the five-day workweek in America. Brazilian workers have fought for this victory, too. I congratulate them on this achievement.
Working people deserve time to live, not just work. Building a better future means giving people more of their lives back. And we’ll keep fighting for it.
