"The California Coastal Commission allegedly delayed new permits for Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to install fire-resistant utility poles because of concerns about an endangered weed. The commission disputes that report — and there’s still heated debate involving multiple agencies." writes PRI's Steven Greenhut.

California's proposed wealth tax may target billionaires, but working families could bear some of the economic costs.
According to PRI's new study, the tax could leave California's economy 3.4% smaller than it otherwise would be after five years, with more than 230,000 fewer jobs and over $1,700 less income growth for the average family.
The question isn't just who pays the tax. It's who bears the economic consequences.

"In a frothy press release on the test scores, the governor claimed that academic achievements continue to rise under his administration. According to the governor’s spin, the test-score gains in English and math show that his major investments in TK-12 are succeeding. However, despite the minor incremental gains from 2024-25, the just released scores are still below the scores from before the COVID pandemic when Newsom took office." writes PRI's Lance Izumi.

Nearly 400,000 fewer jobs. That's one of the potential economic consequences examined in PRI's new wealth tax study.
When researchers modeled California's proposed wealth tax alongside a hypothetical one-percentage-point increase across all income-tax brackets, they estimated 394,662 fewer jobs than would otherwise be created over five years.
Tax policy shapes investment decisions, business growth and employment opportunities across the economy.

"Most Californians don’t like where they see the state going, yet out of habit they consistently support the heavy taxation that holds back an economy that ought to be in a nearly perpetual state of growth and makes living in the state difficult." writes PRI's Kerry Jackson.

"If an addicted repeat offender disappears from tomorrow’s arrest statistics because he entered treatment, recovered and stopped stealing, that is success. If he disappears because fentanyl killed him, the crime statistics may eventually improve, but public policy has failed spectacularly." writes PRI's Steve Smith

"Sweeping debt-forgiveness programs risk creating new problems without addressing the underlying costs of care. Policymakers should resist treating every outstanding medical bill as a crisis demanding government intervention." writes PRI's @SallyPipes.

"Congress should therefore require standardized reporting on 340B revenues and how hospitals use them. Clearer eligibility standards and meaningful charity-care requirements for hospital-affiliated outpatient facilities would help ensure the program serves patients rather than simply enriching providers." writes PRI's @SallyPipes.

California’s insurance regulations called for timely rate reviews, but applications often took far longer, making it difficult for insurers to respond to changing market conditions.
Recent reforms have accelerated the rate-review process, and several major insurers have announced plans to expand underwriting in California. Greenhut examines why these changes are an encouraging sign of stabilization.

California's proposed billionaire wealth tax promises $100 billion in new revenue. But what happens if the state collects far less than expected?
Research from the Hoover Institution estimates the tax would generate approximately $40 billion over five years, less than half the projected amount.
PRI's new study warns that relying on one-time revenue to support ongoing spending commitments could create pressure for future tax increases on ordinary Californians.
