Here, a sample of the magical thinking justifying the UK's anti-privacy crusade

In the name of "tech accountability" we're seeing regulation across the globe that drastically expands gov (and private) surveillance.
This fails to curb the pathologies of Big Tech's concentrated power & grows the harms of the tech biz model -- while claiming to check them.
The UK Government already has the extraordinary power to issue 'Technical Security Notices' to companies. These are orders that could compel companies to weaken security. They're secret, so the company can't tell anyone about it.
Now they want more.

I've always found it interesting that NSO Group says it does not know who its customers are targeting, and at the same time definitively states that Pegasus was not used to target journalist Ben Hubbard in 2018, 2020, and 2021. efile.fara.gov/docs/6170-Inf…

📱 Messaging apps have become a key part of the way we communicate with each other, from keeping in touch with relatives to organising mass movements.
Yet, there's so many, it's hard to know which ones are the most secure.

This suggests that a UK data company sold a list of visitors of opposition sites from a Russian data broker via a subsidiary of a US data broker.
AiData, the Russian data broker, is still in operation. Like its US/EU counterparts, it claims to have data on the whole population.
