Built for two years. Watching the changing universe for nearly 22. @NASA's Swift Observatory has ended science operations after helping astronomers catch gamma-ray bursts and other fleeting cosmic events. Its legacy: when the universe changes, being ready to observe matters. science.nasa.gov/missions/sw…

Two years ago, SkyMapper was just an idea. Today: telescopes across six continents, 1,465 users and 36 TiB of sky data. From an idea to a global network watching the universe together.

Observation of the week: 87 Sylvia, spotted by our SkyKeepers. This potato-shaped asteroid has two moons: Romulus and Remus. SkyMapper CEO Franck Marchis led the team that discovered its triple-system nature in 2005 - the first ever identified. A small dot in our images. A whole system with a story. #asteroid #observation #astronomy

What would you observe if the whole sky were within reach? 🌌🔭 The Andromeda Galaxy. Orion Nebula. Saturn. A passing comet. A supernova halfway across the world. SkyViewer puts telescopes across the global SkyMapper network at your fingertips: choose targets, capture images and observe remotely when your own skies won’t cooperate. Your location doesn’t have to limit your view of the universe. skymapper.io/skyviewer

A bigger SkyMapper network starts with the ability to build at scale. 🌍 Our partnership with HansaMatrix brings SkySphere another step closer to scalable production, helping us expand the network companies, researchers and communities can build on.

Verifiable space infrastructure on-chain! 🔭 SkyMapper L1 crossing 100,000+ blocks to record tamper-proof telescope observations proves custom Avalanche L1s are securing real-world scientific data! Connecting astronomical observations to cryptographic proof is next-level utility
100,000+ blocks and counting. The SkyMapper blockchain just crossed 100,000 blocks, with the chain live and continuing to grow on @avax 🔺 Every block adds to the infrastructure behind a network where observations can have a verifiable history, connecting what was observed with when and where it was captured. Web3 is part of the infrastructure. The observations are what matter. The sky is just beginning and we're growing strong.

Satellite trails ruining your astrophotography? 🛰️🔭 We built SatSafe, a free tool that predicts when satellites are likely to cross your field of view, so you can plan your observations around them. Enter your location, target and exposure parameters, and SatSafe helps identify better observing windows with a lower risk of satellite interference. Spend less time dealing with ruined exposures and more time collecting useful data 👇 satsafe.skymapper.io/

🔭 Observation of the Week: Triangulum Galaxy (M33) Want to see a galaxy 2.7 million light-years away? Open SkyMapper LiveView, select a telescope in Europe or North America, calibrate, choose M33 and observe for 5–10 minutes. 🌌

SkySphere is a purpose-built, all-sky instrument with onboard AI designed to detect, classify and eventually track what’s happening overhead. 👀🌌 When you buy a SkySphere, it’s yours. Hardware and software. No forced subscriptions or planned obsolescence, with replaceable and upgradeable components. We’re starting with 150+ stations, building a global network to monitor meteors, satellite reentries, atmospheric events and an increasingly busy low-altitude sky. Every global network starts somewhere. Ours starts with people.

Alien technology hidden in Moon dust? 🌕🔬 It sounds like science fiction, but lunar regolith could preserve billions of years of Galactic history. Join SkyMapper CEO @AllPlanets and Dr. Lewis Pinault on a special #SETILive to explore the idea. 📅 Oct 9 | 2 PM PDT
Could evidence of ancient alien technology be hiding in Moon dust? 🌕🔬 Researchers are proposing a new way to search for technosignatures: examine lunar regolith for microscopic pieces of engineered material that could have crossed interstellar space and accumulated on the Moon over billions of years. On a special #SETILive this Friday, SETI Institute Senior Planetary Astronomer @AllPlanets talks with lead author and SETI Institute Affiliate Scientist Dr. Lewis Pinault about the proposal, why the Moon could preserve a unique record of Galactic history, and what we could learn even if the search finds nothing. 📅 Friday, Oct. 9 🕑 2 pm PDT Join us live!

The sky doesn’t stop when you stop looking. 🌌 SkySphere captured this incredible aurora over Finland on October 4, keeping watch as the sky came alive overhead. This is exactly why we built SkySphere: to catch what happens when you’re not looking. 👀

Today I was at a meeting organized by the Danish Consulate in San Francisco, and someone asked me to show what we actually do with SkyMapper. So I took out my phone, connected to the network, selected Volker’s telescope in Mainz, Germany, and observed NGC 891, a beautiful edge-on spiral galaxy about 30 million light-years away. A telescope in Germany, controlled from my phone in San Francisco, observing a galaxy whose light started traveling toward us tens of millions of years ago. I think they understood the idea immediately. We built SkyMapper to make astronomy accessible through a global network of connected telescopes. Join us at app.skymapper.io And yes, this is better than scrolling social media.

Your telescope looks at one part of the sky. SkySphere watches all of it. 👀🌌 With a continuous 360° view, SkySphere keeps watching, identifying and capturing what happens overhead, day and night. No telescope required. Meteors, satellites, aircraft, drones and unexpected events. Keep your eyes on the whole sky. Pre-order yours here: skymapper.myshopify.com/prod…
