Grateful that @POTUS is meeting refugee families today and putting faces to the massive displacement we’ve seen. My own parents fled a war with 2 small children in tow, and as I told @mitchellreports, I know firsthand that Americans are eager to welcome those in need.

We didn’t hear it, but it’s also worth noting: The state of our union is strong for having welcomed 76,000 Afghan allies as our newest neighbors. The state of our union will be stronger when we keep our promise of protection to the thousands more left behind in Afghanistan.

Congratulations to @ChloeKim and @nathanwchen! Deeply inspiring to see these two children of immigrants and their families put in the hard work, achieve their own American Dream, and make us all proud. When we welcome, we all win! 🥇🥇

As I told @missy_ryan and @karendeyoung1 for this must-read, we’re grateful there are examples of people getting out, but it’s troubling when you think of the denominator of those left behind, which is not just tens of thousands, but hundreds of thousands. washingtonpost.com/national-…

Our CEO @KrishVignarajah joined @janjeffcoat of @TND to talk about the economic devastation in Afghanistan, particularly its impact on women and girls: “I shouldn’t have to state the obvious that girls aren’t a commodity; they’re not disposable; and they’re not income.”

We made this video @LIRSorg for Mother’s Day, but any day is an opportunity to teach your kids about refugees, empathy, and the importance of welcome. Join me and my daughter for some story time about Kunkush, the “Lost and Found Cat” 🐈❤️

There is such strong bipartisan support among Americans for welcoming Afghan families. Both @GovLarryHogan and I joined a press conference yesterday for the launch of a new nationwide initiative to mobilize support for Afghan refugees. Watch the piece from @kateamaraWBAL 👇

Very encouraging to see initial corporate support for Afghan refugees from companies like AirBnB, Uber, Walmart, but I'd really like to know how defense contractors (who profited TRILLIONS during the war) intend to pitch in to the resettlement effort...

Our work @LIRSorg is deeply personal to me as well. My family fled Sri Lanka as ethnic and religious minorities when I was just a small child. I’m so grateful for the warm welcome we received here, and even more grateful to pay it forward to our newest neighbors 🙏 📸 REUTERS

The President of Afghanistan has left for Tajikistan. Many Afghan allies, women’s rights advocates, and civilians will not have the same luxury of a speedy evacuation. It’s a mad dash to get those at risk out, but for too many, it will be too little too late.

More testimony from children shows extremely-controlled schedules/surveillance, including the scanning of bracelets upon any entry + exit of the facility’s various spaces. In addition to a total lack of privacy, she also notes that English classes are very limited and repetitive.
