From microgravity 🛰️ to anti-gravity! Back at the European Astronaut Center, post-flight reconditioning included running on the anti-gravity treadmill, which, despite its name, does not actually eliminate gravity… 😁 The lower body is enclosed in an air-pressure chamber. By adjusting the pressure, the treadmill reduces the load on the legs, muscles and joints, allowing you to walk or run while bearing less than your normal body weight. That was fun, but I was so happy to be actually running outside a few days after!

Astronauts like @soph_astro and submariners may have more in common than you think. 🧑‍🚀⚓ By studying both, Exposome Signature is helping scientists understand how our bodies respond to extreme environments, with benefits for health in space and on Earth. 🔗 esa.int/Science_Exploration/… #εpsilon

I was seated in the audience front row, and recognised Heide's symptoms. The crew, behind her, couldn't see that she was about to faint, so I jumped onto the stage and luckily caught her in time. Ever since then, astronauts sit during the debriefs immediately post-spaceflight. Don't need anyone falling and getting hurt.
On September 22, 2006, NASA astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper collapsed twice at a welcome-home ceremony in Houston. Officials attributed her wobbles to her body readjusting to Earth's gravity after 12 days in space.

This week in space science we have been incredibly busy. ADSEP is just one example of the research that flew up on SpaceX-35. This one is pharmaceutical development in a box to take advantage of microgravity for drug production!

One of my favorite places to work on @Space_Station is the Life Sciences Glovebox, where we get to be the hands and eyes of scientists on the ground. Here, I’m helping with an experiment called InSPA-Auxilium Bioprinter-Cell Printing, which leverages the microgravity environment of ISS to 3D print cells and manufacture human liver, kidney, and cartilage tissue. Just one of many examples of how we’re using this amazing orbital national laboratory to reshape our understanding of biology, medicine, and engineering, and improve life on Earth!

Yesterday’s bone density scans. This DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) machine uses low dose X-rays to measure bone density and body composition. Without the loading signal of gravity, our bones will leach calcium in space, which can lead to significant losses in bone density. This is why it is so important for us to exercise in space. Thanks to lots of weight lifting on the @Space_Station, the preliminary results show that the bone density in my spine actually increased in space!
