SAC COUNTY, Iowa — A Sac County sheriff’s deputy's patrol vehicle was struck by a distracted driver while deputies were investigating a separate crash involving a vehicle and a deer on Highway 20.
According to the Sac County Sheriff's Office, the patrol vehicle had been parked a safe distance behind the original crash scene to slow approaching traffic and encourage motorists to move over.
Despite those precautions, a distracted driver struck the deputy's patrol car.
The incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers and other first responders face while working along Iowa highways.
Gonna need the defrost this morning 🥶

To say it’s been a horrible weekend in #WesternNebraska would be an understatement.
Lives have been lost and lives have been changed forever.
Driving is a privilege with massive responsibility and massive consequences follow when it’s not taken seriously.

The weight ratio of a freight train to a car is about 4,000 to 1. It’s no contest. Never try to beat a train.

The recent multi-vehicle pileup on I-95 is a reminder of how dangerous dense fog can be.
When driving in fog, slow down, use low-beam headlights, increase following distance, and eliminate distractions.
Remember, the posted speed limit isn’t always the safe speed!
Happy Thursday! A beautiful morning to get stopped by a 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃

With all the rain we’ve received, please be alert for the increased risk of flooding. Flooded roads can hide washed-out pavement, debris, and dangerous water depths.
🚧 Never drive around or move barricades placed across a flooded roadway. Barricades are there to protect you!
That hat might fit someday! Trooper Ohotnicky #354 was ahead of the game recruiting a #FutureTrooper at DPS’s car seat check event today!
The rain didn’t stop us from educating parents on the importance of properly installing car seats!
