That 17% means one engine is not a brand score. Report visibility per engine, and weight branded mentions, which correlate 0.664 with AI visibility vs 0.218 for backlinks in the Ahrefs 75k brand study.
The latest article by Arfadia's Founder & CEO, Tessar Napitupulu, is now live on Forbes Agency Council: "Your Brand Has A Different Reputation In Every AI Assistant".
In BrightEdge's study, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode recommended the same brands on just 17% of queries. AI visibility should be measured per platform, not as one blended score.

Being THE answer is narrower than being cited: a page can be cited and still lose the pick. Test whether the answer names the brand with a quotable fact. Citations, statistics and quotations lifted visibility up to 40% in the KDD 2024 GEO paper.
Access is only the first gate. After the fetch, citation still needs third-party proof: branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI visibility, versus 0.218 for backlinks. Then check each engine separately.
A Google ranking does not prove ChatGPT fetched the page.
Pick one ranked URL. Check robots.txt and your access logs for OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT's search crawler. If that crawler is blocked, fix access before you rewrite.

Source status is measurable, not just aspirational: branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI visibility, versus 0.218 for backlinks. Becoming a source means being mentioned by others, not just publishing more.
▪️// SEO IS NO LONGER THE WHOLE SEARCH GAME.
The brands of the future will not just compete for attention.
They will compete to become 'sources'.

The scoreboard already moved under this debate: branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI visibility vs 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 75k brands). The new phase is not a new acronym; it is a new unit: mentions, not rankings.
Is SEO Really Dead, or Are We Just Entering a New Phase of Search?
There’s a growing narrative in digital marketing:
“SEO is dead. GEO is the future.”
But is that really what’s happening?
I don’t think so.
What’s changing is how people discover information, evaluate businesses, and make decisions, not the fundamental importance of high-quality content, structured information, and search visibility.
Let’s distinguish three concepts:
🔹 SEO (Search Engine Optimization): Improving website and content visibility in traditional search results.
🔹 GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): Improving the likelihood that content can be discovered, used, or cited by generative AI systems.
🔹 AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): Structuring content to deliver clear, relevant answers to users’ questions.
These approaches are not necessarily competing strategies. They overlap and increasingly complement one another.
So, what’s actually changing?
Traditionally, a potential customer might search Google, review several websites, compare providers, and make a decision.
Today, that same customer might ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for recommendations.
This creates a new discovery channel, but it also introduces new challenges.
A company might rank highly on Google and still be absent from an AI-generated recommendation.
Does that mean its SEO strategy has failed?
Not necessarily.
AI systems differ in how they retrieve, interpret, and present information. Some use live search, others rely on learned knowledge, and many combine multiple approaches.
And even with GEO optimization, visibility in AI-generated answers is never guaranteed.
But I think we’re overlooking a more important business question.
Why are we so focused on getting mentioned by AI systems before understanding the commercial value of those mentions?
A brand could appear repeatedly in AI-generated responses without generating qualified traffic, leads, or conversions.
Instead of asking:
“How do we get ChatGPT to recommend our brand?”
We should ask:
“How do we build a trustworthy, discoverable digital presence, and measure its influence on customer decisions?”
Because the goal isn’t simply AI Visibility.
The goal is:
Visibility → Trust → Qualified Traffic → Conversion
What should businesses actually do?
Create useful, original content that addresses real customer questions.
Maintain accurate, structured product and service information.
Strengthen technical SEO, crawlability, and indexing.
Build credibility through relevant, trustworthy digital sources.
Test AI search visibility and measure attributable referrals and conversions where possible.
The bigger picture:
AI is changing how users access information, but it hasn’t eliminated the importance of search engines, content quality, data, or search intent.
GEO isn’t the death of SEO.
It’s another layer in the evolution of digital discovery.
Businesses should focus on integrating these approaches rather than chasing the next marketing acronym.
What do you think?
Is GEO becoming a genuinely independent discipline, or is it a natural extension of SEO and content strategy?

Job seekers: name the one document, sheet, or system that actually changed your search. Not an app you downloaded and forgot. The thing you open every day. Building a list from the replies.
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands. Backlinks barely predict whether AI recommends you (0.218 correlation). Web mentions do (0.664). The SEO scoreboard and the AI scoreboard are different sports. Who owns the second one at your company?
Connecting SEO metrics to citation data is useful, but the honest cut is per engine: only about 11% of domains ChatGPT cites overlap with Perplexity. A blended dashboard can show a win while one engine never mentions you.

YouTube accounts for 22.9% of what Google AI Overviews cite. Reddit is 18.5%. Company blogs barely register. AI recommends what communities and cameras say about a brand, not what the brand says about itself. Where does that leave content marketing?
The step analytics misses is not the search, it is the shortlist: by the time someone googles the name, the answer already picked the winner. And it is per engine, since only about 11% of domains ChatGPT cites overlap with Perplexity.
everyone in SEO is asking if GEO is a distraction. AI search sends almost no traffic.
i build an AI visibility tool. i mostly agree.
but when ChatGPT recommends a tool, i don't click the link. i google the name. analytics never sees that step.
my take on @randfish's video:
The waste of time question splits on measurement: audit only ChatGPT and you miss the biggest pool. YouTube is 22.9% of AI Overviews citations, Reddit 18.5%, and only about 11% of ChatGPT cited domains overlap with Perplexity. One engine audit is not an AI visibility audit.
Is AI visibility a waste of time?
Three new studies out this week suggest that very well might be the case. New #5minutewhiteboard 👇
All four systems in one bundle, $99 vs $152 separately: agentopsvault.gumroad.com/l/…
The scale point has a source consequence: Google's answers cite a different pool. YouTube is 22.9% of AI Overviews citations and Reddit 18.5%, so the biggest AI search engine rewards video and forum presence, assets a ChatGPT citation audit never even counts.

The country split sits on top of an engine split: only about 11% of the domains ChatGPT cites appear in Perplexity answers for the same questions. The source pools barely overlap before geography enters it. Four platforms, two markets: eight separate visibility games.
New AI Visibility Index study just dropped!
And turns out, AI doesn’t recommend the same brands everywhere. 👀
We spent 7 months looking at how 4 AI platforms recommend brands in the UK vs. the US. And yes, there are some pretty interesting differences.
Here's what we uncovered:
-Which brands consistently made the top 100 across all 4 platforms.
-Why getting mentioned and getting cited by AI aren't the same thing.
-How to benchmark your brand's AI visibility market by market.
Get the full breakdown in our latest study: social.semrush.com/4zD6Kbi.
We checked how AI answers actually work: only 11% of the domains ChatGPT cites show up in Perplexity's answers for the same questions. AI visibility is not one ranking. It is a different game per engine. Which one sends your product its buyers?
