This kind of mass dehumanization is how historical atrocities begin and this administration's willingness to act with such cruelty stems from the fact that they simply do not view these nonwhite migrants as people. The last part of Raskin's post is particularly telling. Trump's entire immigration narrative is built around the lie that he's targeting violent criminals to keep Americans safe, that all of his state-sanctioned brutality is justified because in the end we'll all be safer. In reality, the rooms built for violent offenders stand empty while innocent families are forced into cages. This has always been about seizing more power for Trump and pandering to his racist base. There can no longer be any arguing on the matter. Between this new horror and the killings in Minnesota under her leadership, Kristi Noem has revealed herself to be a profound threat to American democracy.
