AI is great, but AI kiddies pretending to be experts can GTFO. All they do is pump out AI slop, leaky software, and copyright infringement, pissing off actual experts.

So, universal RCE for Apache mod_php is easy. For php-fpm it is not, still working on it.

truth
I'll be the first to admit I'm mediocre at exploit development, but I am in contact with enough extremely talented exploit developers to say this for certain: Anyone claiming they were "easily" able to generate a working php2shell exploit with AI is either: a) a world-class exploit developer with an extreme case of imposter syndrome. b) currently looking at some very confident-sounding but wrong LLM output. I'm rather certain it's the latter based on the number of AI-hallucinated exploits I've seen posted on GitHub. Threat actors are also blasting my honeypot network with "php2shell" exploits that not only don't work, but aren't even within 10,000 miles of anything to do with how the exploit actually works. I've seen the same technique from the attached image in multiple alleged "php2shell exploits", including one on GitHub with over 100 stars. Problem is, it's not php2shell, nor is it even a vulnerability at all. It's a technique known as "session poisoning", which can be leveraged to exploit local file inclusion (LFI) vulnerabilities in PHP apps (not PHP itself). The only thing it has in common with CVE-2026-109618/CVE-2026-109619 is they both use the "PHP_SESSION_UPLOAD_PROGRESS" feature. And mitigation advice for both issues reference setting "session.upload_progress.enabled" to "Off". People are shoving loose details of the vulnerability into LLMs, the LLMs are keying in on the "PHP_SESSION_UPLOAD_PROGRESS" string, then generating session poisoning code that has nothing to do with the actual CVE. And because the people doing this have absolutely no idea what they're doing, they're confident enough to post their "proof of concept exploit" to GitHub and share it on social media. So if you see people talking about "session poisoning + LFI" it's likely their LLM hallucinated an exploit based on a 2018 blog by Orange Tsai talking about a local file inclusion attack vector. What's even worse is that "security researchers" are then using LLMs to triage these exploitation attempts, falling victim to the same hallucinations, then confirming there is ongoing mass-exploitation (there currently isn't). The actual real exploit is very difficult to exploit, and so far I've not seen anyone successfully get it working on more than a handful of PHP version with highly-specific configurations. LLMs are useful tools in the hands of skilled professionals, but for others, they're often just a Dunning-Kruger accelerator.

How people react to php shows their skill and my conclusion is I will continue believing only top CTF players who has been before the AI era

Current information I have on php2Shell: - The RCEs requires the attacker to obtain memory addresses which are typically protected by ASLR. - I suspect the original author (lcfr_hax) likely has a reliable exploit which leads to stable code execution. - Most of the PoCs being posted are completely non-functional AI slop. - There is at least 1 working non-slop exploit being passed around, but it's reliant on bruteforcing for ASLR bypass, so not particularly impactful. - Rumor of ITW exploitation are patchy. There are attempts being seen using the non-functional leaked RCE, or variants that are config / system specific. - Some rumors point towards a known-working exploit being used by threat actors (I've personally confirmed this specific exploit works, but the ASLR bypass technique is unreliable at best and massively limits the potential impact). - I'd expect heavy ITW exploitation in the next few weeks based on how many people are looking at this. Though, success rates will vary heavily based on the specific exploit chain.

The official IDA MCP Server is here. It's free, open source, and works with any LLM. Your agent writes IDAPython, uses ~20% fewer tokens, and can share an IDB with you in real time. 𝚞𝚟𝚡 𝚒𝚍𝚊-𝚑𝚌𝚕𝚒 𝚖𝚌𝚙 𝚒𝚗𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚕𝚕 hex-rays.com/blog/hex-rays-i… (copy-paste: uvx ida-hcli mcp install)

And this one is human insight w/ LLM-assisted research. Took about one week to finish everything. The AI really rescued me from a lot of tedious work — excluding the part where it changed the Domain Admin password, locked me out, and claimed it got RCE 🤦
Aaaand it's official! Orange Tsai (@orange_8361) of DEVCORE Research Team chained 3 bugs to achieve Remote Code Execution as SYSTEM on Microsoft Exchange, earning a whooping $200,000 and 20 Master of Pwn points. Full win! #Pwn2Own #P2OBerlin

That's my chain — a full chain w/ logic bugs only! No memory corruption, no AI, and of course no collisions at all 😉

Amaze! Amaze! Amaze! Orange Tsai (@orange_8361) of DEVCORE Research Team (@d3vc0r3) was able to exploit Edge with a sandbox escape! If confirmed, we wins $175K. He's off to the disclosure room to explain how he did it. #Pwn2Own #P2OBerlin
