AO mainnet is now live.
This is a huge step towards the kind of internet we in the @ArweaveEco have been building towards. I am immensely grateful to the incredible builders and our amazing community who worked so hard to make this happen. While this is a major milestone, we also know this is just the beginning.
My motivation for building AO comes from the same place as Arweave: I believe our online lives should come with guaranteed, immutable rights. Just as constitutions guarantee our rights in physical space. As we spend more and more time online, it's essential to ensure the rights we cherish are not lost.
Arweave laid the groundwork by providing permanent, decentralized, and uncensorable data storage. With AO, we're building on that foundation, adding a decentralized, open-access supercomputer directly connected to the internet. This enables confidential, decentralized computation and helps us shift away from the centralized control of Web2, opening up access to information and opportunity for more people.
This launch marks a new chapter, and I'm so excited to share it with you all.

I've noticed a common trend in the Web3 space: many developers are focused on porting existing Web2 applications directly onto the blockchain. But we need to ask ourselves—is this really the best approach?
The strength of blockchain lies in decentralization, security, transparency, and immutability—qualities that are especially valuable in contexts that demand high levels of trust and data integrity. In areas like high-frequency trading, real-time social media, and content distribution—where high performance and low latency are crucial—blockchain can lead to inefficiencies and increased costs. This isn’t a flaw; it’s simply that blockchain is best suited for specific applications that make the most of its unique strengths.
Not every application needs blockchain.
Trying to force-fit Web2 applications onto the blockchain can lead to wasted resources and unrealistic expectations for Web3. The real potential of Web3 lies in providing an entirely new user experience, not in replicating the Web2 model. We need to focus on applications that truly leverage blockchain’s decentralization advantage, such as digital identity management, data ownership protection, on-chain data verification, and supply chain tracking.
Shouldn’t our focus be on building innovative applications fundamentally different from those in Web2?
I encourage Web3 developers: rather than spending valuable resources on migrating Web2 scenarios, let’s concentrate on exploring the unique value of blockchain. Let's ask ourselves: What do users truly need? What new experiences can blockchain provide? Building innovations that genuinely belong to the Web3 era should be our ultimate goal.
Web3 shouldn’t just be a shadow of Web2—it should offer fresh experiences, a new trust model, and enhanced user rights. Let’s work together to reshape the digital world and create applications that bring real, revolutionary value.
